coral banded shrimp

coral banded shrimp

I honestly wouldn't do it if you ever want to add other shrimp. I am about to post about the best way to get mine out. I have a 90 gallon and he was one of my first additions over a year ago. I would love to add a bunch of cleaner shrimp and fire (blood) shrimp but everytime I do he kills them. They are super aggressive and will not tollerate other shrimp in the tank. If he is the only shrimp that you plan on keeping then you might want to grab one because they look cool and will hang out in the open all day. But once they decide that your tank is their territory they will take out anything they can.

You can not only keep a pr of stenopus, but other shrimp as well, I love stenopus (the genus of coral banded shrimp) and I keep prs. with cleaners, bumble bee, peppermint, harlequins and several species of hermits in my 24 gal nano. the only problem you have is pairing them up, I have never been successful in pairing them up in tanks. I have always collected prs and never had a problem. I see many prs available now both online and in LFS so you should be able to get a compatable pr, just make sure if you buy them online they are shipped in the same bag. I have lost prs by seperating them even just for the time they spent in the bags.

i have a mated pair of banded shrimp & i also have 1 cleaner and some sexy shrimp. they usually hand out in their cave w/ the goby- however i do keep them well fed and usually feed them in their cave so they never bother anything.

I have 2 peppermints, 1 CBS in a 40 gallon. The CBS was first, but he hasnt bothered the others. As long as they have their own territories and are fed it shouldnt be a problem.

In order to pair them (at least how mine paired) you will add the new one to the tank. Either they accept each other and are inseparable or they fight in which case you have to take one out and return it. I added one to my 110g and they fought but the second one I added they paired up immediately and are always together now.

Keep in mind when pairing , the underside of the female is blue.
When they get older they will become quite aggressive and are known to kill fish as well as other shrimp.

I've been successful 3 out of 4 times pairing them up.I buy 2 at the same time.I look for 1 that is larger than the other.I open both bags together in a bucket. You'll know pretty quick if they will pair up.If not it is alot easier to take one out of the bucket than trying to take one out of the tank.My pair are inseperable and share food with each other, pretty cool to watch.

unless you buy two at the same time then no. these guys can be really aggresive and even go after fish. you could try puting one in a net or something and then putting it next to the other one and see if they get along.

I have a coral banded in my 29 bio. Added a fire shrimp. sHe terrorized him and the fish as well. sHE IS SMALL TOO. unless you really have your heart set go with other shrimp. Coral banded get nasty and will go after other inverts . Ive heard they will love peppermints when they get bigger and that is in taste not friendship. Need larger tank.
Mine isnt as nasty anymore since my jawfish tore off his claw. Guess she messed with the wrong fish!
