Coral Banded

I've had one for bout a year and everything is fine. The only thing i've noticed is that the shrimp will, once it gets big, occasionally lunge at a fish. I've seen him try to catch my cardinal fish a number of times, but I don't think he'll ever catch get one. I think as long as your fish are a decent size and the shrimp isn't huge, then you'll be fine with one.
 
i have had a gold banded for two years and it has been a great little critter, i see it hop on the fish every once and a while and give them a good cleaning. and no im not talking about a cleaner shrimp.
 
He owns it. Hangs upside down on frag rack, comes out all the time to pick around the tank.
 
nice for some reason mine is being a little sally and wont come from behind this one rock. He eats and everything but always goes back to that rock. He just molted two days ago so i dunno if he still a little shy.
 
They will get aggressive and territorial with size. If you have a mated pair the behavior gets worse. They do lunge at fish and will kill/them if caught assuming said fish is small enough. At night they roam looking for food and again, if it comes up on a fish sleeping in a hole, guess what...sushi.

My experience was based on having a CBS for 2.5yrs in a 55G DAS system. Imagine how one would behave in a NANO. If you're gona do it why not try those little golden CBS.

PS - mine only lost its temperment when it broke a claw.
 
Haven't had such good experiences with them. Mine ate my mushroom corals and then started to go after several fish which I noticed had shredded fins all of the time with him around. I removed him and then the fish recovered. I much prefer cleaner shrimp for nanos, although CBS look really cool. By the way, I did notice that CBS typically like to hide near caves and only wander out occasionally.
 
I would say stay away from the coral banded. I got one for my 14g biocube . They are beautiful and interesting and he never seemed to bother any coral except for crawling over and probing every nook and cranny for pods.after 3 months of bliss i noticed him lunging after my clown fish than my red barred goby disapeared.
I still was not sure of the shrimp being the culprit but I had a feeling. A week later I bought a firefish and a yellow watchman goby. As soon as I released them as usual the new fish headed for cover in the rocks .With in two minutes I witnessed two attacks on both fish. the goby got a torn fin and the firefish got a lethal gash on his side.
Needless to say the shrimp has been removed from the nano and placed in my 55g FOWLR tank with My shrimp eating canary wrasse. Pay back is a b*tch!
He is still alive but if he gets too large I might trade him in!

So If you are really attracted to the CBS go for the golden variety they are generally smaller and safer as TEX mentioned!

I have had mine for about 2 years. He comes out more at night though. He is pretty neat.

Be careful though, they will sometimes go after your fish. When I had a bigger tank he would go after my flame hawk.

Overall it's been a pretty good experience.
 
I am wary now, because i have seen him lunge after my OC clown if the clown wanders too close. I love the way CBS look, but wish he was more of a social creature. Do you guys think i should trade him in for a cleaner?
 
I had a CB in my 55g mixed reef. I thought he was really cool and funny to watch, we even named him "Arnold", (as in Schwartzenegger), he always looked like he was "flexing". Well, flexing his muscles he was, it was shameless the way he tried to eat my fish! Very cool and neat looking, but would never have another again with small and/or slow moving fish.
 
I have a pretty good size one. He's got quite a bit of personality. No issues, other than he does like to eat. Actually he's real active, out all the time, never hides,all over the tank and the rocks. Keeps everything pretty clean. No problems with lungin or catching fish. Just keep them fed well. Mine love both mysis and formula 1 pellets. Go for it they are fun critters!
 
I had one in my 55g, loved to try and catch the tail of my yellow tank...I think he wanted some extra meat haha. They will scare the hell out of you when you wake up in the morning and you see them laying upside down, but then you realize its just the exoskelaton and they shed during the night =)
 
i also have one and he is a little bit aggressive. he will jump at my fish if they get to close. i dont think he will ever catch 1. he is pretty entertaining to watch though.
