Coral Maternity in Portugal

Maybe this question is already been asked but just a curiosity. What do you do with all your frags once they out grown your tank?

OP you should have more videos on your tube channel :) looking forward for the upcoming video as well

As you suggest, I'll post more videos showing all the updates I've done in my prop for a long time until today.
For now, the next video will be showing the way I do when some of my frags are generated from the polyp - the video was recorded today - and I intend to continue showing them growing until they reach the plugs.

Cheers,

Great!! Also I'm glad how you run everything with T5, has switching to LED ever cross your mind? My opinion on LED is that they are not quite there yet, I also don't like the fact that you can't play with the colors.

Hi friends, sorry for delay.

rogergolf, maroun and Carlitos Reef, today I gonna be with my friend and tomorrow the video will be uploaded in youtube. Please visit this thread tomorrow.

ReefCupid, when my frags grow out I frag again and again or offer some of them to close friends.

Long time ago I tried LEDs but I think that they were not powerfull enough for SPS tanks. I gonna make some tests with a LED pendant (2W) very soon to see the effect and how corals deal with it.

Sounds good have fun, It will definitely be interesting see you test out the 2W led. Honestly I've seen some tanks do very well under those fixtures. Others with led higher than 2W tends to have more problems.

this was one of my first questions.
how small can you cut to make a frag

vic

he says that he can cut down to 1 polyp with success.
he said he would give more details when he frags and such. (i asked this kind of question a page back)

i personally cant wait for the video!!

This is the video showing the way I prop some of my acros from the polyp. I made 4 frags and I hope that, at least, one of them will survive in order to see him become a colony. It's shown how prominent should be the polyp scleritis to be possible to remove it from the colony.

I hope you like it!

Excellent video Machado, thanks for sharing your techniques with us. I really look forward to the next video, when should we expect it? :D

Thanks,

Jeff.

Machado:
why do you put the iodine water in the holder? is it to prevent stagnate water?
most of the time i dip my corals in the iodine to help heal after the cutting, but wasnt sure why you put it in the cup? unless it wicks up to the cut coral.

thanks for that video!
and as mentioned, i cant wait for the next one!

WOW :bounce2: Thank you so much for this great video!!
I have a couple of questions and I may also know the answer to some questions posted already. Some questions may sound dumb but I am still learning :sad2: and I still read a lot around but get confused sometimes.

-When you cut the small colony from the mother colony does it release anything being cut under water?

-A polyp would be that small thing you cut off right, so why do some people when it comes to a zoa or acan they mention polyp or head. Isn't polyp and head the same thing?

-When you cut off the small colony do you remove all the small polyps and frag them? What do you do with the small colony left over without polyps? Or maybe you also frag the small colony and the polyps will grown again perhaps?

-Where can I get those covers and holders?? I am in the states.

-How big do you let the polyp grow in the cover until it can be removed from the cover?

-How fast does the polyp grow with your method?

I am assuming the reason you leave the polyp inside the cover with Iodine with RO water in the holder, is to give it and help the polyp to grow successfully perhaps? Being that the polyp is so small, it has a greater chance of surviving being submerged in iodine and RO.

I intend to post videos regularly. Thanks for your words.

To prevent infections and heal the injuries of the polyp existing under the rubber cover.

Sometimes they release some mucus. I think that is better to cut the corals under the water because they don't stress too much.

-A polyp would be that small thing you cut off right, so why do some people when it comes to a zoa or acan they mention polyp or head. Isn't polyp and head the same thing?

Heads are polyps too. Zoa or Acan are solitary polyps (heads) and Acros are colonies of polyps, living together in a group.

--When you cut off the small colony do you remove all the small polyps and frag them? What do you do with the small colony left over without polyps? Or maybe you also frag the small colony and the polyps will grown again perhaps?

I can remove as much polyps from the colonies as I want to make frags. When I leave some polyps in the small colony, these polyps generate too new buds.

--Where can I get those covers and holders?? I am in the states.
I use to buy them from Holland. Surch Zwapak in the google.

-How big do you let the polyp grow in the cover until it can be removed from the cover?
I leave the polyp grow up to their maximum size.

-How fast does the polyp grow with your method?

When appropriate conditions are present (water parameters, water movement, water temperature, lighting conditions, calcium level, etc.) the polyp spreads rapidly over the rubber cover and a new polyp (bud) is produced after +/- 4 or 5 weeks at growing edge of the polyp.

Great video!
I'm also curious about the iodine in the vial.

I use iodine to prevent infections and heal the injuries in the tissues of the polyp localized under the rubber cover.

What do you do with all of your SPS?
Also, how to do ensure you don't get Acro eating flat worms?

earlier he stated he only get frags from certain places/people that he knows are pest free.
also, he QT's everything!!
but he might have new methods or tips. (cant wait to see that as well)
