Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank) - split

Peter, it is good to hear from you! Hope your wife is well and we are all looking forward to some updates.

Hi Peter, Shawn, Dave, etc.

In the past 6 weeks I've read Chingchai's thread, and then this one. I honestly can't recall how I ended up on them, or which I was on first. As I've had odd moments of spare time I've read a few pages, I believe I have read every word.

I come from the planted freshwater world (nature aquarium/amano-style with EI dosing) and not reefkeeping but a lot of the principals are similar and even a lot of the equipment.

Unfortunately during the time of reading your threads has also probably seen my exit from the hobby. 125gpd RODI topoff stuck on while I was in Las Vegas for a photography convention/awards (I'm now an international award-winning photographer [alas for people, not for aquariums]). I haven't successfully struck a work/life balance so may or may not start over at this time.

You have always seemed to genuinely appreciate posts by people that have completed reading through the thread. I wanted to add one more to that running count in your head and let you know that I enjoyed your journey, even somewhat after the fact.

I wish you the best, and my hopes for your wife's recovery. I do know, as someone who as suffered from an illness for 18 years now, that sometimes it is better to hope for life improvement than recovery, so if that is the case I hope for that.

My thanks to everyone who has participated in this thread over the past years.

Edit: I didn't realize this was my first ever post on reefcentral. I guess I've always just used it for PMs for equipment trades. Woohoo and what not. My join date still beats most of you ;-)

I will be brief. I just finished a movie in the theater (the Book Thief) so my head is in a different space at the moment. You are right I am and will forever be impressed with folks who take this journey. There is a sort of familial bond that forms in this process that I have deep affection for. I haven't been as involved with the thread as late partly due to the very nature of the forum which is geared to those building an environment rather than maintaining it. However the truth in my case is that the build continues and I have been lazy about documenting it. At some point I believe I will pick up the urge to write and bring the community up to date. This kind of recognition certainly fuels the desire to to revisit the thread more frequently.

Thank you JM.

Peter

Peter, Unfortunately I feel you are right. Of course it is interesting to read built threads, especially those in which lots of thoughts are being shared in an interactive manner. Personally, I equally enjoy the threads which follow the (mostly slow) progress made in tanks that are running. Setting up a great system is an art, so is keeping it stable.

In the thread about my tank not a lot of spectacular stuff is going on, but I like to post a picture of the tank every now and then. I hope you'll find time and urge to supply us with some pictures of your incredible system.

I feel the build threads are great, but learning how people change their systems to fix issues they have encountered are more educational. That is why, I love to visit build threads to see what people are changing or not changing and why.

The other thing I wish more people would do is post videos more often.
A lot of these build threads are amazing, and it seems like most want to have a beautifully edited video to post to the thread. But the reality of just trying to keep your thread updated and then waiting to have a beautifully edited video done, keeps all of us followers in the dark. I would rather see people take videos with their cell phones and post them more often then waiting for the perfectly edited video.

One other point about videos, please post at least 5 to 10 minutes of the entire tank as if you were standing in front of it. A lot of people zoom up and move around the tank which is great, but just sitting back and seeing the entire tank and the fish swimming, corals swaying etc.. are just as good.

I hope the tank is doing well. I wonder what big changes if any have been made. I hope he does a nice video update soon, i want to see some coral growth photos also ! pretty please !

Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank) - split

Wow, just wow. I have read through both ChingChai's build which lead me to here - it took me a number of weeks to get through all of it. Being new to SW, there were many amazing thoughts and best practices that were established and rationales shared. There have been many contributions throughout; Mr. Wilson's, Peter's and of course the forum (I feel like I know everyone). Although some were over my head, as I move through my "smaller" journey, I can also reference this one. I appreciate the candor, focus on goals, and academic way this build was approached. I am however interested in any good husbandry tips that could be shared since I am always coming back here for ideas.

Thanks very much! BTW, the videos were excellent as well :)

Hi Peter, I feel i just had à fantastic holiday reading your thread from start to finish. Thank you for sharing. I have noticed that the activity is à bit slow lately, I hope all is well and look forward seeing some more updates. After spending so much time reading, it feels like I know you all which is weird since this is my first comment. Anyway, greetings from Belgium hope to hear from you soon.
