Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank) - split

I do know there have been a couple of discussions about Mr. Wilson's cement formulae in the history of this thread before the split. I think if you search cement in this thread you will probably find it. If you can wait he just might pop back into the thread. You are right by the way there is as much art as science in the formulation of these structures and Mr. Wilson is probably the best artist in the world outside of Andy Trippa when it comes to reef tank construction.

yep that talk was a "while" ago for sure so many posts since then that I have no clue where to point you toward:

I did not catch in the begining the silicon hoses isolating the hard plumbing. I wish that I had before I did all of our classroom display or would have mimiced its use

maybe next summer I will pull the sump out and replace that undersized pump on the closed loop

its all too difficult during the school year and over Christmas break I have too little desire to spend more time in the lab than I have to :)

Would you say the coral pest problem is now gone or still hanging out???

and how bad was rock bottom with those little devils

Its never fun dealing with pests or critters damaging the reef but as I have said in the past.....life on the reef has its natural ebb and flow and learning to accept that is an important part of sustaining this journey with a positive perspective. I believe we are past the AEFW infestation or at a minimum the reef has found its natural balance point where damage is minimized. I do have a peculiar persistent bug of some kind that neither I nor Mr. Wilson can find an obvious culprit to explain the damage to the SPS. Mr. Wilson feels it could be some sort of bacteria while I am not so sure but there really isn't anything obvious to account for the damage. However, some sps is doing really well so I think we just have to grin and bear it. I have continued to hold to the overall principle that with a tank this size you don't consider medicating or intervening with chemical intervention. Its just too risky and I firmly believe the tank needs to develop the natural 'resistance' to these challenges. Time will tell if I am on the right track. Its a good thing my watch is on geologic time!!!!!!!

Ah ok... I'll give a search through the thread then :D

Edit: Hurray I found the thread.... unfortunately it just says what thread it's in not which post... I can wait :D

In order to see the individual posts instead of just the threads you have to set this parameter at the bottom left of the Search window.

The cement used was Emaco 88 ci made by Basf. The discussion goes back to here in the first thread (before the split) and was back in 2010 which is too far back for the Search engine on RC. Follow the link provided here and go back and forth to the surrounding pages to see the different key points and questions raised and answered.

Aaaaaah... thanks a ton Dave, I had no idea that separating by posts was an option, could have saved me a LOT of grief searching over the years :D

Thank you Peter, I agree that natural balances make the most sense in large tanks. I hope that what ever is getting those corals this time is very short lived. I look forward to recovery pictures as your reef rises from the ashes of that disaster

best wishes
David

hi peter, i am a big fan of your tank.

my wife is finally really into reefing with me, after i showed her your tank videos on youtube. maybe this has been explained but why did you stop making the beautiful, breathtaking videos after the open house video?

Glad the worms seem to be under control, and I agree that best growing conditions and feeding maximize natural resistance. My coral theory is that quantity and proximity of coral to one another help feed each other, thus providing even more food.

Hello all,
I found this thread from a link over on ********* so i thought i would have a look see last Sunday and well started reading the first thread before the split read a bunch of pages went to sleep Monday woke up read a few then said hey i want to read it all so called myself and fired myself for the week lol so here i went 317 then 31 and all the videos customers calling all week i was like umm i am on vacation call back next week lol. I'm always amazed and humbled by folks who take the time to read through the whole thread. Thanks for the positive feedback. I do want to put up a web cam and have been experimenting with a number of different makes. So far I haven't really found anything I am happy with. When I do I will broadcast but it might be a while yet.

We were recently honoured with a visit from someone from the Vancouver Aquarium. They were nice enough to give me a tour of the Vancouver Aquarium a couple days ago. Not only was it super cool to see the aquarium behind the scenes, it also made my trip out west tax deductible:)

IIRC, their reef tank is 2500 gallons. They use a Joe Yaiullo style prop pump for flow, (14k) 400w metal halide lights, GFO, an MRC protein skimmer and ozone.

They have a vey large Hydonophora, large colonies of Pocillipora and a lot of blue and red mushrooms. They use natural seawater collected from the harbour.

Their cold water marine collection is world class. They do their own collection close to the North Pole and breed a variety of species unique to them. The curator informed me that they used to cut ice for packing fish, but with recent warming, they have to make their own ice, which was saddening to hear.

Here are some pics...

great shots and summary, thanks for sharing with us!

I did the lighting for the reef tank at the new Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto. I'll take some pics this week and post them. I made some custom 500w LED pendents with five channels.

500w LED pendents?!? Wow

that 2500g reef at Vancouver Aquarium looks so natural in your FTS's
