Please keep in mind that I don't consider myself terribly experienced, although I will be wetting my hands in saltwater again by the 4th of July holiday after a way too long hiatus! With the posts about maintaining paramaters, what I get from the discussion is a reinforcement of how important it is to not have all of your eggs in one basket. I believe the significance of water changes, along with supplementation when needed, along with reactors or kalk (in the calcium example) as part of the every day routine, need to be considered. A mixture of techniques, with no one of them "strong" enough to tip the balance too far has many obvious advantages. I think anyone who takes on the challenge of this hobby, from my small 29 gal build to something the size of Peter's, needs to consider what combination of strategies give our captive charges the highest possibility to thrive.

About 20 pages back or so we discussed the use of Mangroves, i have over 200 pieces and am willing to sell some to this great group. PM me if you are interested. Let me know how many you want. I can even ship them to you.

Glassbox designs has a brief write-up on Peter's skimmer as they compare it to the more modern MRC commercial skimmer. http://glassbox-design.com/2009/mrc-is-2492-w-industrial-protein-skimmer/

Earlier in this thread, I posted some info on modifying an RK2 with a Sequence Dart-based, Orca needle wheel pump (1980 LPH air intake at 175 watts) in place of the stock Mazzei injector. Some people use an Alita-40 air pump to force-feed air into the needle wheel of the Orca for a total air intake of 3400 LPH at 135 watts plus the wattage drawn by the air pump. http://www.championlighting.com/product.php?productid=34380&cat=0&page=1

The RK2 could also be upgraded with an Askoll-based, ATB Airstar 2700 (2700 LPH air intake at only 60 watts). I've never heard of anyone force feeding air into the ATB Airstar but they are designed to run cool so I don't think it would be a problem. http://www.atbskimmers.com/products/inventory.php?category=Skimmer Pumps

The Sequence Orca is half the price of the ATB pump, but it uses three times the energy and runs cooler and quieter so the ATB is the smart choice. I'm not sure which pump runs better with the relatively high head pressure of the tall RK2 skimmer. That would be another key factor in pump selection.

The service from Victor at ATB can't be beat. Austrian precision product with excellent service here in North America.

Julian Sprung recommends 1 mangrove pod for every two gallons. That should help you decide how many you need.

That is correct. Thanks Shawn! Also mangroves are best kept in tighter substrate such as sugar sized (oolite) sand bed or miracle mud would would good too. Good thing for peter.

Here's the 12' tall protein skimmer for the new 30,000 gallon shark tank at the Warsaw zoo. Manufactured by Sander from Germany.
