Coral Tank from Canada (1350gal Display Tank)

In my 180 gallons, I am fighting Nitrate for the last year after a system crash. I am doing big water change but the nitrate always stay high (between 25 ppm and 50 ppm). If it's true, some people has reported nice result after using the NP Bio-Pellets from SWC in their system. Their nitrate went down after 2-4 months. Therefore, for less than 250$, I have started a reactor with 1 liter of these pellets about 2 weeks ago hoping that the nitrate in my system will go down. I will let you know the result within a month.

You can see my little 180g tank before my system crash on my personal website at www.sunnyreef.com
Note: It's just a plain page with a video of my tank on it. (it's not a commercial website).

You are a very nice guy to open your house to all of us. It will be very nice to meet you. So, next summer when I will go in the Toronto area, I will pass by to say hello. And maybe you will also teach me some tricks on your nineball pool table :lolspin: I am so bad :sad2:

Sorry for my english as you have already notice, english is not my first language:cool:.

Chris

you may want to be careful with running the pellets not to deprive your corals.
ive been experimenting with pellets for 4 months.i like to keep a little nitrate to keep corals happy.im actually at the point now tring to source nitrate.

yay i won something woohoo!!!

lol ya once i saw that picture i had to have it! You wouldn't believe how many people i meet on here and tell me they were expecting the fat guy lol!
Terry

It's the missing moustache that really through me off when we met in Florida :)

peter im waiting for the envailing of the green shrubs, hows that coming along.
my best system ever involved mangroves

vic

We just got 200 mangrove pods last night so you will see a sea of green soon. One of our mangrove wall planters came in broken so we are waiting for a replacement and a sump.

I was just wondering if there where specific GAC cartridges, or do yo utake something like this
http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store...-clear-refillable-cartridge-for-di-resin.html
and fill it with GAC

No no, watts makes a normal disposable filter which is filled with GAC. You can find them for around $10-$15.

They will not be called "GAC Filters/Cartridges", they go by the name Carbon Block Filters in the title. Here's an example of one: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/1-micron-matrikxr-1.html

Sorry I never say no to women, but I'm going to here :lmao: The filters will be called GAC filters, that one you posted is a carbon block. The difference is a carbon block is a solid piece of carbon, hard like wood. GAC just like our hobby is granulated.

I stand corrected then ;) Post us a link of them for sale somewhere so we have an example. (U.S. please)

So is the carbon block filter of no real use to us? I have well water water and run 2 sediments (5 and 1 micron) and then 2 carbon blocks (5 and 1 micron), my 75GPD membrane and then a 20" canister of DI Resin. Comments?

Have you checked your source water? most cities will have nitrates in the tap. A RODI should be removing them. Use your nitrate test kit on your source water. If your registering nitrate then your membrane needs replacing.

Good point, I have a TDS meter at the output of my RODI and the reading is 0. Do you think that it does not detect nitrate?

I am planning to replace my membrane any how. Tonight, I will test my pure water to see if there is nitrate in it.

Thanks for the idea.

Vic, are you telling me that the NP bio-pellets from SWC are actually working in reducing nitrates? If yes, I am very happy.

Sorry Peter, If I have hijacked (not sure about this world) but this info will be maybe very important at one point for your setup if you are occurring high nitrate level in your tank. That also may help to feed even more your fish without worrying about nitrate level.

Thanks for the info

Peter - this is the most detailed and complex system I have ever seen - are you sure that you and your team aren't creating some type of chemical defense reactor or something are you?

Seriously though, I have been following your thread from the start and for someone who has only a FOWLR tank and was always a bit weary to get into the reef environment I am not sure if I feel better or worse. One thing for certain though, if I do at least now I will have a chance to do it properly.

Thank you for sharing this truly amazing build with us - I will continue to lurk to the end.

Wow this thread moves fast :P

Just to report, the GE Merlin was tossed out months ago after being replaced a few times. Replaced with almost identical set-up as depicted by the works of chago in the fishroom.

Great work!!!

Sarah, if you want US I'm not sure of a site, check the sponsors one must have GAC.

Ti, to be honest I don't know for sure but I would check your water just in case. Sometimes simple TDS meters may be wrong. Use a good test kit to see if there is nitrates.

I didn't like them either, just didn't do the job for me. Great job on the water system.
