HOLY FISH!! im just curious on what you plan to stock this tank with!

This tank will feature coral with fish as an accent not the reverse. The fish will likely be spectacular but they will be ideal specimens complementary to the island archetecture they represent.

any estimate as to the total water volume for the entire fish room?

Probably close to a thousand gallons in line and another 500 in isolated systems(the mars tanks included). I think........maybe a bit more. I plan to have some display tanks in the fish room as well.

I have to say this is probably the coolest thread I have seen. I am deffinitely envious. I would love to have the capital needed to build a tank that big. I will deffinitely be around for the ENTIRE build.

Thanks for your generous comment. Part of my mission is to make it very very clear that this hobby is NOT about money or who spends more but passion, discipline, patience and a determination to keep learning to get a great result. Make no mistake this effort could be a huge failure and it would not have anything to do with the size of the bankroll. Having said that, it is true that no matter who you are or what station in life you have, this is one verry verry expensive hobby.

Looking good Peter :).

Thanks Jeff, this is a long long journey. By the way I did source 1000 gal of RO water for my live rock on Friday. I have two four hundred gal tanks to hold the rocks till I can bring them into the tank. Although the consensus seemed to be that it was not necessary I decided to add a skimmer during the holding period.....as I assume it can do no harm.

Thanks again for your support.

Peter
p.s.
There's a tour at the end of this for you.

While all the tank adjustments were going on to mount the unit on the stand the crane was used to move the new backup generator that is dedicated to the aquaria and its supporting systems. It is 17,000 watts plumbed into the natural gas line to ensure that 3 seconds is all the down time the whole system will ever encounter. It tests itself once a week and confirms by email that all systems are healthy.

After the generator was placed on its pad on the side of the house we moved the three Mars systems into the basement for deployment into the fish room.

Peter, excellent choice. I have a 14kW nat'l gas standby that will actually power the house. We live in central FL and with the storms in '04, many homes were powerless for days. That was reason enough for a generator. What brand did you purchase?

Hi Peter,
I have to say this is the most incredible build thread I have ever seen.
I can only begin to imagine how much planning and research that must have gone into this project.
Keep up the great work ! I will be watching things progress, and learning lots from this thread.
Thanks,
Cam.

P.s We are almost neighbours... I live in Stoney Creek, Ontario.

To be honest I'd have to go look as I can't remember. I upgraded the power to the house from 200 amp to 400 amp then got the separate 60 amp panel for the aquaria. The panel came with the generator. It appears to be a very intelligent system providing a fair degree of comfort on top of a reasonably stable power grid except for 4 day power outages once a decade!!!!!

How did you ultimatley decide to handle all the rock and storing it until you get the tank wet? I am looking forward to this build.

The wife and I decided when I upgraded to a 280G that we would design our next house around the tank. :D

Holy F my hat. GO CANADA!

Very impressive!@! I will be tagging along with everyone else for this massive build.

I grew up in Oakville :)

peter this just may top the puddle. By the way i think i can see your house from my back deck over looking the niagara escarpment. if not yet i will definatly be able to pick it out after dark when all those lights are giving off that 20k blue color we all love so much.

how are you going to "separate" the islands?

That Matthew is an excellent question that goes to the very heart of what I hope to accomplish, thematically speaking. First I'm not totally sure yet. I can tell you that the first island is very straight forward as it will be Chingchai island. If you want to get an idea of the look and feel, apart from familiarity with Chingchai's thread, take a look at the thread by the fellow that took his old tank. If you can't see Chingchai's sculpted influence in miniture then I've missed the boat.
Having said that the next Island should honour David Saxby. His narrative on his preferences for aquasculpture is very clear and distinct from Chingchai's. so how to separate the two is still a conceptual challenge and add to that his clear preference for huge numbers of fish and there's alot of imagineering to do to solve the nature of the distance between the two. The other two candidate islands will just compound the challenge even more. But I'm working on it!
