Peter - Moorish Idols only do well in huge public aquariums in groups , it is possible to keep a single healthy eating specimens for sometime in an aquarium like yours but i would not recommend a group to any aquarium under 5000 gallons.

Thank you for that......lets see.....5000 less 1350 equals 2650 gal....ok

This means the next build has to be 2650 gal and it has to be joined to the old display tank, right?

oh Mr. W I L S O N????Mr. W I L S O N?????

I'll be right back.

That may be true but Peter and his "A" team are trying for "best" practices and he might be able to pull it off...that I believe is in part what he is trying to do instead of doing what others say can't or shouldn't be done. :)

Mr. Wilson - Do you have any experiences with Moorish Idols kept successfully in home tanks?

I suspect that the advice I am getting from Kinlayan is sound. I am not above taking risks but I would prefer a managed risk on this issue. Best practices doesn't necessarily mean successfully taking on all risks. Sometimes, best practices even means not doing something when the conventional wisdom in this community argues against it. Generally risks taken with best practices only works well when you know what numbers are going to come up before the dice hit the table.

Having said that I for one really appreciate your enthusiasm and support. Lets see if we can find any support for a responsible attempt........

I am all up for experimenting and trying things that some would say are impossible,
the thing is many people do try to keep groups of Moorish idols in smaller aquariums(even 1000 gallons plus) the end result is most die within a few months due to infighting or the fact that these fish need huge space and special diets to thrive in captivity.

I know a few people have been successful with single specimens and these are challenging in themselves. A Public Aquarium called Bayworld in Port Elizabeth has successfully kept groups of Moorish idols in a huge swimming pool size aquarium for years that is why i suggested 5000 gallons plus for groups.

I am just giving general guidelines it has been tried before and id say 99% of the time it fails - i am not saying you may not be in the 1% that succeed ;) Also keep in mind they are not always friendly to all types of coral

I just finished this novel and like all the other enthusiasts am amazed. I have learned a ton, but now am distraught because I have reached the end. Looking forward to more; thanks for the ride. The attitude, information, and banter truely made this great read.

Thank you........ I promise that there will be more that will be no less satisfying without seeming repetitive. Thank you for your 1st post, and welcome to our community.

Well said. Shawn.
Moorish idols are one of my favorite fish as well.
But for me, it is too difficult to keep even one in the tank.

Peter, you are so funny :D:D

Sorry, Judy would find out somehow:(

Ha ha, no matter what size the tank, it never takes too long before you start thinking about going bigger.:eek2:

I kept a moorish idol in a 6x2x2 for about 2 years (the one in my avatar), lovely fish nice and freindly would eat from my hand, but I had to dismantle my tank and I thought I had found a good home for it but it died after a few weeks.
They are a very sensetive fish but in the right environmant they will thrive, I have no doubt that one will survive in this tank aslong as you have enough sponges on your rock for them to eat to start with, unless you get one thats feeding on frozen.

I wouldnt keep 2 though, from what I read they have huge territories in the wild and only tolerate each other because they can just swim away, I know a fw people that tryed keeping 2 and they just fought until one died, but then the other is usually too weak to survive after the fight.

I was checking out you're thread and was blown away! I am also considering switching to LEDs. I just need to convince my wife :)

Congrats on having your tank in Coral magazine. Was just reading the latest issue and saw your tank. Took a second to set in that I was looking at the same tank I see on RC all the time LOL!!

Cheers.
