Thanks Shawn ;).

I'll have to try my chance and see if I'm lucky to get a custom officer who's a reefer as well ... .

Paul

I have a friend and livestock provider for my business who has his brokers licence. If you want me get him to pick up a pile of them let me know and I will ask.

Great thread

Great thread

I know you guys have read how great this thread is many times. Well I just want to add one more time to that list. Lots of great info. My tank is only 55g but it is interesting to see the process for a much larger tank. I do plan on upgrading in the future and this info sure helps. Keep it coming guys.

Sean, you might want to have a look at this thread. I was so intrigued by your postings about cannister filters that I started a thread on it.

Thanks for the kind words.

I'm glad mechanical filters were well received. I thought I might get roasted when I first started to read it. I've used Ocean Clear, Pentair, Jacuzzi, and a number of generic models. They are only as good as the person using them, but if you make them easy to change it will happen.

I use diatom powder for tank overhauls. It not only brings the catch down to 1 micron, it also makes the the cartridge a lot easier to clean. You should buy extra cartridges and periodically bleach them then dechlorinate to remove fine debris.

I hate to see you struggling to get Mangroves

The mangroves I use and Anthony Calfo will not let me lie to you.

Are the red ones from Hawaii.

Why we don't organize a shipment together and we bring them.

That way everyone can get their hands on a good bunch.

The price is about $0.99 a piece plus shipping.

Who says me??? (I hope this is allowed)

As a piece of advice as right now the border is a little sensitive due to new regulations that are affecting the industry. FYI

Sean, when you say make them easy to change, do you mean physical access or something more? How difficult is it to determine when the cartridge needs to be changed??

I've always wanted to do this.

A question for Shawn ... would it ever be a problem to bring this mangrove pods back from across the border at all? I do frequent Buffalo quite often.

Or better still ... I may attempt to bring back loads of these mangrove pods from my hometown and of course with the proper permit.

Thx,
Paul

OK Paul I'll bite, where is your home town?

If you must know ... pretty close to Australia my friend. The island of Borneo in a place called Sabah and part of Malaysia (the better half IMHO). Also known as "The Land Below the Wind" ... :wildone:

If you have to visit Borneo in the near future, please do call me. I can be your personal Tour Guide as I do speak the local language and was born and raised there ... LOL!!

I think I have an area I can cordon off but I can't be sure until the fish room starts to take more shape. I'm thinking that apart from the good they might do, the appearance of a green forest will add to my determined philosophy of having the fish room featured as part of the display experience.

I am in fact putting in a picture window to be able to look in to the fish room while looking at the display tank. I found a great new window technology that will allow the user just to touch the glass and it goes dark or in some cases whatever opaque colour you want. I've had a problem sourcing the glass in Canada so I may just have to use a motorized home theater blind instead.

Peter,

A thought came into mind ... visualize this a reptile refugia and instead of reptiles ... why not a mud filled mangrove implanted refugia with all the humidity in a controlled enclosure?? Just a thought ....
