I guess Vancouver Island is not in driving distance. Been with you since Day3 of this thread. pure and simple Awsome Build.

Vancouver Island may not be around the corner from me but it certainly is closer to heaven!!!! Thank you very much for the generous praise. We have a fantastic team in this thread and thank you for hanging in all this time.

You deserve more credit than this simple well done ...........well done.

ahhhhh, finaly I made it as well threw the entire story.

boy what a info, I bin trying to write all things I learned, however I skiped I think 2 things.

- what do you use as VFD, can profilux do this, a light computter ore what?

- I have seen ECODECO come by for a short moment, however I did not find the deep input thoughts about it.

I think there system could work wel in a mid large tank of 300G and up.

I have bin in contact with them for a while, to find out more, and it is gust the lack of budget at this time, otherwise I would try to build it myselve (sponsors are welcome)

I think 1.5 to 2K wil do, as the info I got tels me thy only mesure redox, and adjust parameters accordingly (the info on there website, and as patented is the old version) this system in the beginning was very complex, but thy trimmed it down to a basick redox and dosing setup

at least some thing like it, I wish I could put up a test tank, but would need the funding to do so, and figger out the trick.

this all as I curently have a 450 gal setup, and are locking at options for a new and hope bigger tank after we move next year.

anyone interested in a 450G set up, it might be pricy, but you get the house with it !!!

peter, Mr wilson, any input about ecodeco and your VFD

thanks Kevin

Hi Kevin, could you tell us more on Ecodeco? i've tried contacting them with no luck...

For the RO unit discussion I have a Puratek system by Vertex and am quite happy with it. The built in booster pump is nice and the little controller that does automatic backflushes, and diagnoses lack of water conditions is quite nice. Now I haven't put 1000g through it so I can't comment long term but so far it works quite well.

it seems to me all of the systems that the vast majority of us reefers are using are just fine for "normal" size tank needs, but when it comes to the incredible amount of water peter will be needing, something a little more powerful/ creative appears to be a more probable solution. I have been using a brs 5 stage with dual di for 3 years now without a hickup, but I also make around 100 gallons of water a month. This is why i was suggesting a larger/faster/more efficient system a page back. Of course I could always be wrong, just a thought

Live Rock Update

Live Rock Update

I had no idea just how many friends you have until you try and give away some dead live rock. Unfortunately it has all been promised so I have effectively run out. I'm sorry for anyone who wanted some but I honestly hadn't expected it to be so popular.

Thanks very much Sara. I know its long but in the second part is the flasher in full bloom. Did you catch him/her/it?

Peter

I just watched that one on a full screen so I could see better! Yes, I saw the "2nd fish you didn't know you had"! He flashes quite brilliantly! I also believe I saw my favorite Blue Assessor in there too! You have quite a fish collection already!

I also like the blue spot jawfish out on the sandbed that was evicted by the gal for aquiring too much rock rubble in their house (hint, hint) ;)

At work we used RO/DI water as part of our process and as such have a large system for producing what we need. What has been realized though with having 1 large system vs 2 smaller systems is the lack of backup. If a booster pump fails or any other items fail and your RO system is off and with a single system you are down until it is repaired, 2 systems gives you some water instead of none.

Most RO systems available are designed for home use or aquarium use and are sized for normal small amounts of consumption. If you want to have a single larger system for these amounts of water then Peter will need to move into the commercial products range.

Hi Kevin, could you tell us more on Ecodeco? i've tried contacting them with no luck...

as we immigrated from Holland, there is no boundery for language, be it Dutch, German or French, so that makes things a bit easier.

I had several phone conversations with them, I don't have much time now, I will get back to this later today with the info I have about it

Great videos!!

I'm curious approx how many fish are in there now? Do they stick to their own section of the tank or swim end to end?

How fortunate you are to be able to stare at that all day long! :)

This is an inspiring build well done to all involved in it!

I have some questions - i recently also acquired a blue spot jawfish i have noticed that it at night quite often decides to almost battle with it's reflection in the glass and then fly to the surface of the water and try and leap out- to this end i installed a netting cover which i hope prevents it jumping out- what have you installed to prevent this on your aquarium , you have quite a few jumpers in there jawfish, fairy wrasses?

Is there a chance to see a video of the rk skimmer in action? i have seen them at work in public aquariums but not on home aquariums

Once again well done!! very impressive

Oooh, yummmm. An equipment room video with everything running... that's a fantastic idea!!

I noticed you said you were giving away the extra live rock (that is now dead) but i was curious to how much of the rock you actually put in the tank 1000 lbs? 1500 lbs??

this is why i recommended trying the GE Merlin system

http://www.watervalue.com/merlin.html

it is small, fairly inexpensive, and produces 750 gallons of water a day, now there will be a need to take your own canister and pack it with DI resin, but I think this would solve their problems pretty quickly, and of course due to it being relatively inexpensive for this quality of a unit 2 could be purchased, and they made for things like commercial ice machines etc etc, so you can have the fast water production with good tds rejection rate, small size, and pretty good price, instead of a very large bulky expensive machine that you couldn't have a backup spacewise

**side note I think the link I did before was to a different site, these systems are fairly common it seems I don't really care what site its on, you can price hunt for yourself:)

I haven't had any jumping in the display tank yet. I have had a couple of attempts in the Wilson's Bars but nothing successful. I will be talking a bit more about fish psychology in the next post.

I will be doing an extensive walkthrough of the fish room but with the permanent sump not being there and other equipment still being tested I will wait for more stability. I know everyone wants it warts and all but it just wouldn't make any sense at the moment. I have been expecting the sump for a month so hopefully it should not be too long before things settle down.

After You get the sump, you should do a video anyway, just incase there are some modifications that need to be deltec with. Or to getfinal ideas before completion. Although I'm sure your ready to be done and enjoy your tank....

I just spent the last half hour responding to your post and my new Mac ate the post and won't give it up. So one more time............

I have been meaning to comment about the fish behaviour because I believe it to be somewhat interesting as I expected something very different. From the outset I have observed no strong tendencies to exhibit territorial behaviour from virtually all the fish. None of the fish seemed to be excluded from any part of the tank which in some ways makes it much more challenging for any kind of census work.

I feed the fish from different locations which also seems to defeat any notions of territory to guard. Flow is fairly good in enough locations to encourage fish to move around the tank. There are enough hiding places to give the fish confidence and security no matter where they are in the entire reef system.

I don't have any large fish so dominance and submission behaviours are well hidden to say the least. The nature of most of the fish is to get along as we tried to avoid obvious enemies or combatants. The only testy behaviour happens between the Blue Jaw gobies and sara has already explained why they are the way they are!!!

The size and shape of the tank are clearly factors affecting the disposition as well as the lack of overcrowding. Remember the coral is the main event so I expect to see changes in the makeup of our fish population as time goes on.

I guess I can answer this. That unit you brought up does not make more then 150 gallons per day unless you get the booster pump version. As a matter of fact there is no such thing as a RO that has a respectable rejection rate that can produce more then 150 gpd without a booster pump. That being said with a booster pump that unit I have tested and still does not come close to the manufacturers rating(under Ontario water conditions) Now if there is a residential size "high output" unit. It still won't make the cut. Reason being is, this unit that you posted is for Drinking Water. They market it as a on demand RO systems that does not require a tank. I sell a similar product to homes. At the end of the day its way faster then a regular RO BUT!!!! it is designed for drinking water. Why that fact is important is because the filters and membrane are designed for the amount of water a perosn would drink, not the amount of water Peter needs for water changes. Peter is going through 1000gallons a month, that system would be completly expired after 1000 gallons, because 1000 gallons on that system under normal use would be drinking water for 3 years. The difference between a 600gpd system like that and a 600gpd commercial system is the commercial ones are designed to filter tens of thousands of gallons constantly.
