Greetings and happy holidays to all! I will not fill up your thread with too much of the same compliments and awe at the incredible journey you have set out on and so graciously included all of us in. This thread is one of the primary reasons I have decided to make the jump from my 28 gallon nano to a 275 gallon. . . nano I guess. (Seems so small compared to your reef.) Peter, your openness to others input and your ability to find true talent in the reef keeping realm and your tireless dedication to documenting everything for our benefit is second to none. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thank you Mr. Wilson and all of the rest of the team for sharing your seemingly boundless knowledge.

This is really important, as the holidays can be a major drag with everything being closed. We needs our entertainment, we does, and nothing could be better than to see your system finally falling into place. You've been held back unnecessarily for so many months I'm surprised you haven't hurt someone by now.
Anyway, best of success over the weekend. I'll be following closely.
Cheers,
Dave.M
alright finally a sump, cant wait to see it. I hope the last guy who said your sump was being shipped 6 months ago doesn't show up with your sump on a donkeys back. I hope he takes returns
Hey! I resemble that!mr.wilson said:Peter had me throw some extra hay in the manger just in case an *** or two show up.
Happy boxing day?
Thanks jestersix. I'm really happy with the plasma over the refugium. The chaetomorpha is growing like crazy. Our refugium is small, so we have to go with quality rather than quantity. Sure, you can grow algae with a compact fluorescent twist bulb, but nowhere near the full potential...
I lean toward white light, over blue. We just installed the new Aqualine 10,000/13,000K 250 watt HQI bulbs and the PAR on the substrate is 350 vs. the 150 we get with Phoenix 14,000K. The light looks more vivid, bright and alive. I'n sure the corals will grow faster...you get more bang for the buck with lower colour temperature bulbs like the Aqualine 13,000k or plasma, and supplement blue with T5 or LED.
I was disappointed with plasma when I set up the first fixture on the tank. Now that the other two fixtures appear to be more blue (higher colour temperature) I may look further into them. I haven't used a dimmer yet, so that may change everything. I am however concerned that the plasma may need to be dimmed below 70% to get the right colour temperature (12,000-14,000). LED doesn't work well near hot lights, as plasma are...
I think you will find that it doesn't take much dimming to get the plasmas down around 12K. IIRC, mine hit a defined blue shade around 90%. I would love to convert my refugium to plasma but the heat/space issue make it impossible. I am planning on moving one of my mangroves to a container outside the tank where it will bask in plasma lighting - hopefully grow big and strong since I like that better than a palm tree by my display.
Agreed about the Refugium lighting, had a fixture fail and I am currently running a compact twist - my chaeto is growing at less that half the rate I was getting from a T5 fixture.
I am running a Reefbrite strip just below my plasmas without problems, but I have open fixtures (no hood/canopy) and excellent airflow. The addition of the blue LEDs makes the viewing perfect for my taste.
FYI, here is a growth shot of one A. millipora frag in the system over the last six months. Sorry for the less tahn stellar photos!
