Coral Wars!!!!

I have no personal experience with clams, but I've seen clams with shells covered in aiptasia in other people's tanks. The aiptasia doesn't seem to bother the clam even when it touches the mantle, so I bet they're pretty resistant to stings.

I'm kinda surprise how powerful capricornis is! I had no idea. I figured pretty much any soft coral would pound it into submission.

moonstone brain vs. ricordia yuma

winner: moonstone brain
as a side note: The moonstone reached out with a 3" - 3.5" inch sweeper and zapped the yuma. I found it being stung in the morning and pulled it away. The ric looked like somone took a bite out of it, but it lived.

I found Coral Agression chart at FINS: The Fish Information Service some time ago. Quote from the site (this is NOT from personal experience, but some people might find it usefull):

"5.2 Coral Agression chart

Also provided by Steve Rader.
I've typed in a useful table from SeaScope (winter, '92) in which Michael Paletta discusses coral aggression in reef aquaria. It describes the two major aggressive mechanisms of corals: the release of terpenoid compounds and the use of sweeper tentacles or mesenteric filaments. I found it useful because it includes a majority of imported live corals.

The entries marked with a tilde are my additions--Telia anemonies are placed above open brain coral because I've observed them burn my red open brain coral. Both types of colonial zooanthid anemonies listed seem to release terpenoids that keep mushroom polyps at bay somewhat. Also, I've included other common names I know of in quotes.

Relative Aggressiveness of Commonly Kept Reef Invertebrates

MOST AGGRESSIVE...

1) Elegance Coral (Catalaphyllia jardinei, "Tooth coral")
2) Hammer Coral (Euphyllia ancora, E. fimbriata, "Torch coral")
3) Other Euphyllia (E. glabrescens, E. cristata., "Frog's spawn coral")
4) Bubble Coral (Plerogyra sinuosa)
5) Grape Coral (Physosyra lichensteini, "Small bubble coral")
6) Mushroom Coral (Fungia actinoformis)
7) Flower Pot Coral (Goniopora sp.)
~) Telia Anemonies (Telia sp, "Strawberry anemonies; Colony anemonies")
8) Open Brain Coral (Trachyphyllia geofroyi)
9) Cup Coral (Tubinaria peltata)
10) Moon Coral (Galaxea fascicalaris, )
11) Closed Brain Coral (Favia sp, "Dead brain coral")
12) Star Polyps (Pachclavalaria sp.)
13) Leather Coral (Sarcophyton sp.)
14) Tree Coral (Sinularia sp., "Fire coral")
15) Gorgoniana (Gorgonacea sp. et. al.)
16) Waving Hand (Anthelia sp.)
17) Xenia (Xenia sp.)
18) Giant Mushrooms (Rhodactis sp., "Elephant ear coral")
~) Sea Mat Anemonies (Zooanthus sp., "Sea mat rock")
~) Ricordia Anemonies (Ricordia sp. "Sea mat rock")
19) Mushroom Anemonies (Actinodiscus sp., "Mushroom polyps")

...LEAST AGGRESSIVE" End of quote.

As to clams, Antony Calfo and Bob Fenner say in their book, that clams are quite tolerant to most everything, unless are shaded by neighboring corals.

Personal experience - coming :) My frags are about to start to overgrow each other.

I am having a battle right now, the current standings are as follows...

1.) Frogspawn vs. Zoanthids = Frogspawn
2.) Bubble coral vs. Colt coral = Bubble
3.) Colt Coal vs. Open Brain = Colt

...My tank is too small :( I need to set-up my 150 ASAP.

thanks puffy. Not suprised with 1 and 2, but number 3 (colt beating an open brain) is suprising.

Do you know the scientific name of the open brain in question? Or can you explain exactly what happened when they collided? (IE: length of time, final outcome (death? or bleaching?)

Would love to learn from this, thanks!

Hey Kelly!

Looks like the Bubble is up to it's old tricks, huh?;)

Green Bubble Coral vs. Green Star Polys

The winner is the Bubble Coral hands down. The bubble is actually stretching to wipe out the last of the weed known to me as star polyps:D

I only have a few green ones left. I never had brown star polyps but i would imagine they would be the smae strength as the green ones. Good luck!

Toadstool vs Open brain ===Open brain.

Toadie was being eaten by brain, cut the toadstool and let the brain finish its meal.

hippo tang pushing corals into eachother vs me:hippo
green slimmer vs purple cap:slimmer
purple monster vs red bugs:red bugs

Hippo tang moving frags around the tank like they were play toys vs me? Me :uzi: got him out with a trap and off he went:D

I had a medium sized aptasia on the shell of my prized Squamosa:

6" Squamosa Vs. 1" Aptasia = Aptasia

I saw that the aptasia was stinging the mantle of the Squa!

2ml vial of Kalkwasser paste Vs. 1" Aptasia = Melted Aptasia and a Happy Squa.:D
