Just wanted to share, 3.5" coris flavovittata (black and white wrasse, yellow stripe coris) juvenile/sub-adult not regularly seen in the aquarium trade, I've had it for 2 days now in quarantine, looks great and eating like a pig. Endemic to Hawaii. I'm hoping it is a female.

Thanks, Felix.

Well, its a win-win, since it's not like the males are ugly. :lmao:

It isn't really in the trade because it is bad luck to collect them. the fish is the brother of one of their gods and is given special treatment. While I know this isn't true, and probably only older natives and students of the hawaiian culture probably know the story, it is still an interesting cultural story.

I don't remember the god, but he had a brother who was swimming in the shallows and a fisherman cought him. Thinking it was just a fish and not a mortal brother to the gods, the fisherman threw him on the BBQ to cook him. That is how he got the black lines, they are the grill marks, his brother heard his cries of pain and came and rescued him punishing the fisherman.

Kind of a cool story don't you think?

Yeah he's a real stud  , actually that is a bad pic but I've seen some better looking males, I was hoping someone could distinguish the sex on this little guy now in his/her sub-adult phase, but since its so rare in the trade most people have never even seen it. I have a gut feeling that its a girl, there's just a sexiness to the way SHE swims. :o

That is pretty amazing, I'll make sure to not upset this little guy.

How did yo hear of this story I'd like to learn more about it.

In college I studied native religions because the stories fascinated me. There are lots of stories like that, for instance there is fish in the freshwater trade called Satanoperca jurapari. Jurapari is a south american god and the story goes like this. Some children were in the forest and they were throwing rocks at the animals. Jurapari, seeing this called a huge thunderstorm and when the freightened children ran for shelter he opened his mouth to look like a cave. The children ran in and he ate them. The fish, S. jurapari is a mouthbrooder, when the fry are scared they run into the mouth of the parents. So to the natives it was like jurapari and they thought they were eating the fry so they called it satens perch, who is like the god jurapari.

You can find stories like these in lots of books on ancient cultures, you just have to sift through a lot to find the ones that pertain to fish. It helps to have cultures that are fishermen, as these are the cultures where the stories are most pervelant.

they are neat fish. I generally get them at about 2-3". never had a male though. They are also not that common, compared to say the yellowtail coris. They do get big though :) and will decimate small shrimp and fish when they grow!

It is definitely a juvi but my question is can it change into a male? or will it remain female until....? What makes them change their sex?
