Couple placement questions

I'm about to mount a red planet and setosa and want to know where you guys are putting them? High flow, light etc that kind of thing. THX

Red planet, high light you will get more red, low light you will get more green.

Setosa do better with high light. Both of them like high flow IMO

+1 on the placement, I'm still considering moving my red planet as it is slowly losing most of its green body.

Good to know. I thought the setosa would be a lower light placement. Also, since the red planet tables, would it be better to side mount it?

Mine started as a little nub so it didn't matter how I started it, but if you have a good sized piece you might as well encourage its tabling tendency or place it vertical and it will bush out and then send out the horizontals. Probably more of them too.

My understanding is that long term it will table horizontally regardless of how it is initially mounted. So if you find any particular initial orientation more pleasing, you might as well go for it.

I keep my M.setosa frags out of the direct light of the halides. I tried them in a bright spot and the colors faded as soon as I moved them out from under the halides the colors came back quick. Now they look great, the colors just pop. The only thing is that it grows a lot slower than most other Montipora sp.

I agree with James mine is down the bottom of my tank 24" deep tank with the lights about 8" above that. Par down there 240-300 per Kens meter.

Nice use of italics James.

Grant's setosa is growing like some sort of thick nubbly steroid enraged "The Thing" from the Fantastic Four (you know, "Rock Man"). His is in more light and more flow than mine, which is not growing as fast or as thick and nubbly as his.

The really irritating part is that I gave him his setosa frag and it has now surpassed mine in size and beauty. Don't you hate it when you give someone a frag and it ends up looking or doing better in their tank than yours? I'm not used to that. ;)

Nice job Grant.

Good one Bob.

Yes, Chris, I am. Grant has done a wonderful job constructing his hood incorporating highly focused reflectors, so he gets excellent par with relatively low wattage MHs.

My tank is taller and longer and my larger footprint, less focused reflectors fill my tank with comparatively even though less intense par through most of the tank. My bulbs are aging and I haven't cleaned my reflector glass in months, but I think the same basic light spread will apply when I change bulbs and clean, I'll just be getting high par values generally afterwards.

Don't feel bad for Ken, my corals are doing well but it will be a long time before they catch up with the monsters in Ken's tank.

High par and high flow for my setosa and it's doing great. It's actually very close to my red planet which has been very fast growing.
