Covering Powerheads and other dangerous equipment

I keep reading about the importance of covering anything that could suck the horses in but can't find anything regarding how. Netting? Prefilter material? Pantyhose? What material won't trap gunk?

All material will trap gunk the best thing to do is change it every week or clean it every week.

I used wedding veil on the front of my tunze nanostream powerhead. I did not need it on the intake grating because the impellor is only near the output. You can see it in the FTS of my tank. I use a toothbrush to remove stuff from it or rinse it off weekly.

I can't say much about Seahorses, but Doryrhampus species Pipefish (D. excisus, D. melanopleura, D. janssi,...) would need to be very sick and weakened to be sucked into a pump. Mine (I have several pairs in my reef tanks) like to hang out scarily close to my Jebao WP 40 and 60 pumps and the pipefish would at least in part fit through the intake slots. These pipefish have no trouble going against flows that make regal angels or other larger fish struggle.

It really is less about getting "sucked in" then them sticking their tails in to hitch and getting cut by the impellor.

I use small mesh bags and keep several handy to trade them out every few days and wash them off.
