Criticize my tank! 120 gal garden reef

this is pretty close to what i want to do, all the fish i really like would be classified as predatory, great job!
a quick question... no traditional biological filter? one of the reasons i've stuck with small fish is that i figured being "filterless" wouldn't work with large fish,

I dont know if I fully understand your question yellowsubmarine. For biological filteration I've got a 20 gal refugium with a deep sand bed and marco algae plus I've got somewhere around 120 lbs of liverock in the system.

As I posted up top, the anthelia on the back wall has been bugging me for some time. In a way I like it but it does distract and it is too much pink. I've been trying to find someone local to sell it to or give it to for a while now in order to size down the colony.

A garden reef is a term Anthony Calfo was using a lot in his book Coral Propagation to describe tanks unnaturally filled with a variety of coral/ fish/ and other inverts that would not normally exist in such a close proximity to each other in the wild.

Heres a pic of the tomato clown and anemone that I had handy.

Yeah the anthillia needs to go and you could take a toothbrush to the returns. The bubble algae gives me the chills.

Also what gives? You can run the magnet for us but not a kent scraper..... ;)

How do you keep your Yellow Polyps from spreading like kudzu?

Nice tank, has a mature look to it. I love it when you barely see rock.

when I first scrolled down and saw the pic it was like the kid from a christmas story when the lugnut flew off...
"FFFFFUUUUUUUU--------DGGGGGE'
Only it wasn't fudge
The Lionfish is awesome, and that anthelia probably looks unreal in person.
Everything is amazing (especially that bubble algae ;) )

if you move this all to a bigger tank man it would rock. That is a fan-freaking-tastic tank. Give us some macro shots or at least a bit closer.

The purple tang has actually done a pretty good job getting rid of that bubble algae... sorry those last two were old pictures so I took some fresh ones.

I get in there with the kent scraper from time to time but ya thats been bugging me too. I'll take your advice and tooth brush the returns, for some reason I never thought of it.

I have no idea what keeps the yellow polyps from spreading like kudzu. I've honestly had that colony for 4 years and it wont grow or shrink. Yet the zoathus in there are almost as bad as the anthelia the way they grow.

I've only had the linkia for about a year. I got it from a friend who was taking his tank down last summer. I dont give it any special feeding... I'm lucky if I ever see it.

Again with the bubble algae. It seems like every time someone (reefer or not) sees my tank they immediately zero in on the bubble algae. Has no one spotted the aptasia yet? Here are some more pictures... take a closer look and you'll see those bloody little pest anemones.

By the way I have an eel too. This picture makes him look thin... hes really quite fat.

This platygyra maze coral and the torch coral seem to be the only things that can sting anthelia in my tank.

By the way thanks for all of the criticism and complements everyone!

I might also relocate the anenome, so it wasn't int he front of the tank, since it is so large...

Anemones pretty much go where they want...if they park themselves in a visible spot and thrive like that one, it's wise to leave them there :)

This tank is really cool...it's like some sort of weird mix between reef and fowlr, and it works nicely. You get to keep cool corals, and you get to keep some cool fish :)

As requested here are some equipment shots. This is where I feel I can make the most improvements... my setup is a mess of stuff everywhere. We just rent a house right now so when we move in a year or so I want to set up a new tank as an inwall system with everything planned out a little nicer than this.

The filtersock is there because of the massive amount of microbubbles I'd have without it.

The garbage can holds freshwater for top off.

Love the green monti. Don't care for the back glass being covered, and I think the lion is too big for the tank. Otherwise it is awesome. Great job.

That is a nice setup, i would die for a tank like that.

If you were to do that how could you enjoy it?? lol

I noticed you have rust spots on the carpet  then you realized an upside down Frisbee would do the trick huh rofl
And HEY is that your tank I see in the newspaper!
