Just picked this up from the LFS

I have it in a small cove in my tank, but the problem is that it won't stay upright. It keeps falling over onto its side. Is it alright to leave it on its side, or does the mantle need to be facing light?

Also, do these need to be fed, or are they opportunistic feeders? I use cyclopeez in my tank regularly. It's in an area that receives moderate flow (although most of my tank has decent flow). Are croceas better suited for the rocks, or can they stay in the sand?

Keep the mantle facing the lights, they do prefer rockwork...so I would find a flat rock or clam shell to mount under it or move it up a little in your rock work.....

Rule of Thumb the larger the clam the less it is dependent on filter feeding, and visa versa....But if you do decide to feed the clam then Use live phytoplankton, DT's would be the easiest to use, but its expensive and your at the mercy of its packaging and shipping...needs to be frigerated at all times....but over all good stuff if its handeld corectly....or you could grow your own....much cheaper but a bit of a pita....

By the way thats an excelent looking crocea, love the color....I sure would have broke my wrist reaching for my wallet on that one! Good luck with it....IME they are pretty hardy clams...

Thanks for the info... I uprighted it, but it's still in the sand. I burrowed it a bit so it's supported by the sandbed. I'll look for a spot in the rockwork somewhere though, only problem is that waterflow in the rocks is higher than it is down in the sand.

I'd say it's a medium sized clam... I'll keep the lookout on some phyto, but I guess I won't be frantic about finding it.

Thanks, wasn't too bad in the way of clam price. It was $60. I'm not sure about clam pricing, but to me, aesthetically speaking, it seemed worth it

Yeah I would have paid 60 bucks! If you have some fish in the reef and you feed them the clam will get some nurishment....but when ever you start feeding the tank DTs start small....or target feed the clam, but I think its large enough to take full advantage of those 250's your burning...!
