Crosshatch Triggerfish Help

Hi guys,

After the select few who have Crosshatch Triggerfish.

Have had my pair for a few months doing extremely well.

Male reaches in approx 25cm, female around 20cm.

Both eating raw prawn (shrimp) and fresh mussells out of the shell.

Have had the odd day where they haven't eaten but haven't been too worried.

Male has gotten me worried this week as it has been 4 days since he ate last and does not show any response when food is offered. He is also hiding a lot more.

Only other large fish in the tank is an Achilles, Sohal and Olivaceous tangs.

Has anyone here experienced "food strikes" with no issue or should I be getting more worried?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

Sohal isn't bothering him, none of the fish are. Had to dislodge him from a vortech last night. Unsure if that's where it decided to rest or if it was getting sucked onto it.

Fearing the worst.

A healthy fish won't get sucked into a PH. The suction can really mess up the fish's anatomy too; not looking good, but who knows?

Yeah that's why I'm worried. Has been eating well, active etc.

All of a sudden stops eating.

Pity not many people have these fish so hard to pinpoint a cause.

Don't see how that has any relevance as I've had the pair for quite a number of months but the pair was quarantined for 3-4 weeks earlier in the year.

Very sorry to hear....sadly, it matters...ch, esp large males, sometimes have the horrible habit of dying up to several months after being added to a tank...3-4 weeks of qt will not do much to help rid these fish of issues...ime, they need a real long qt protocol to make sure they are clean, talking 3-4 months...my tiny pair is currently in qt and I plan on leaving them there probably until the end of aug....any updates? good luck....

Crosshatch were the last fish and hadnt added any others for around 12-18 months.

It appears fine just sulking a lot and has gone off food.

Any swelling around or inside the mouth? The Xanthichthys triggers can be prone to small tumors or abscesses around and in their mouths. They can be small and subtle, but enough to stop the fish from eatin.

Did you qt with Prazi? A friend lost his due to internal parasites which wouldve likely been prevented if qt with Prazi.

Hard to see, should I try and catch it and see? Or would they be visible just on inspection through the tank?

Don't treat with anything unless I see an issue so that's a no.

If external, they're pretty easy to see. If internal and the fish opens his mouth, you can probably see it. Some people have had to catch them to find them. Obviously that can be stressful for a fish that is already weakened.

I'm late to the party, but have you done any water changes since the change in behavior. If I have a fish that is stressed, that's one of the first things I do, even if my parameters test out good.

Are you able to move the fish into a quarantine system, if so, it might be a good idea to reduce any unforeseen stressors.

Could flukes possibly be an issue? Have you done a FW dip before and do you think the fish could handle it in its current state?

I hope he pulls through for you, this us one of the fish that is on my list.
