crvz's hole in the wall

I don't really have a favorite. I'd say I go to all about fish the most, but that's only because it's closest. And that's probably only about every other month. Have you one you most frequent?

In bad news, I think one of my fish is nipping the clams. And surprisingly, I've mostly ruled out the half black tang (I was able to catch it and place it in the overflow for a day, and the clams were still peeved this afternoon when I got home). My two main candidates are the kole or naso tang. And I'm leaning towards the kole, but I'm uncertain. I've got a box to place over the clams until I can catch one of the other two and figure it which is the offending fish.

It could be a disease, but the clams are mostly closed up. The box over the clams should prove it to be a nipping fish if they open back up.

I also found what I think is a limpet. Anyone confirm?

That's a stomatella snail. Harmless at worst, beneficial at best. They'll reproduce in your tank too.

Thank you, good sir. I dropped it in my rock cooking tank.

In clam news, the Kole tang is certainly confirmed. I placed the box over the clams for a couple hours, then pulled it away (the clams were mostly opened). Within a couple minutes, the kole just went after one of the mantles (the derasa, in particular). Anyone heard of a kole tang doing this?

In James Fatheree's book on clams he lists all tangs as potential irritants with clams. Its not that they necessarily nip at the mantle, but sometimes they try and clean algae off it with their kissing motion, just like they do on tank glass. If they make a habit out of it it can really **** off clams...

I go to all about fish once a week. Kevin has been really good to me and extremely helpful.

And...sorry....that is totally a stomatella. I +1'd the limpit but this was what my limpit looks like. Your was what my stoma looked like.

I isolated the kole this morning (very easy to catch sleeping fish, as it turns out), and the clams are coming back out. You can see the squamosa in this picture and the posing red mandarin.

I also like blastos.

Beautiful clam and mandarin. How is your main display coming along? In texas, they don't make houses with basements do they? Ive yet to see a tank in the basement from texas.

I'm planning on ordering the tank soon (was going to do so last week, but I couldnt get a hold of the LFS), so once that's done I'll work on cutting up the wall. And nope, no basements in this area, especially at 20 feet above sea level (where my house is).

Am I reading this right?
The animal got a slow painful death from it's caretaker because he is ignorant.

:eek1:????
Im not sure how you got that idea? That stomatella snail will be more than fine in there away from any predators at best

I might suggest you need to not jump to such quick conclusions. The rock cooking system is nothing more than a sump filled with water and base rock which I'm seeding for use in the main system. To suggest I am ignorant is hasty, at best. Put more effort into understanding something prior to making such contentious comments.

Nice shot. :) FWIW, I removed my clams when I had my dussumier because it could not resist the temptation either.

Well it was not a quick conclusion at all. On these forum we see lots of "what's this, do I need to get rid of it" threads. You asked "what is this" and then you told us you dropped in to cook with the rocks. People do things like this, but they usually keep quiet about it
I've heard about cooking rocks before and it's not been about seeding them.

Now that you have explained, we can bury the hatches.

Cooking rock, the term used in this hobby, has nothing to do with heat.

Thanks! Thus far I'm more interested in keeping clams over a kole tang, but if the blonde naso starts in I may have to readjust that position.

I tried to leave well enough alone, but could not..

"Well it was not a quick conclusion at all. "

Yes, it was.

"and then you told us you dropped in to cook with the rocks."

No, he said he put it in his rock cooking tank, not in to cook with the rocks"

"Now that you have explained, we can bury the hatches."

Actually, your apology to the OP would be a good hatchet burying point.

Another couple of weeks gone by. The kole tang has not learned his lesson, so I will probably be looking to move it elsewhere. This weekend I plan on upgrading my main electrical panel that's in use with the one I built recently. I've gotten a good portion of it wired up, so now it's just a matter of doing some of the swap out. It will stand off the wall about 6" to hide wires and other facets of the electrical system, but pictures will better explain it. Hopefully I'll nab some this weekend.
