Cryptocaryon Irritans - tank transfer method

Not sure if the question is directed at me, but I'm feeding a few pellets in the morning, and some frozen food at night.

Snorvich- Thanks for all your hard work. I am just completing my 4th tank transfer this morning on some pretty sensitive fish and they have all made it perfectly fine, not to mention they eat literally minutes after the transfer. The achilles became infected with ich badley as he looked as though he had been rolled in salt. The first transfer he showed ich, less on the second, and none the subsequent transfers.

Fish list- Achilles tang, Chevron tang, Purple tang, and a female zebra angel.

How often are you feeding fish during TT?

I feed two times a daily very sparingly so the ammonia doesn't rise, but they look fairly content eating wise. I also do a heavy feeding right before transfer (about 30 minutes), and any left over food stays in the tank that is being cleaned out anyways.

Are you dosing with Prime, as well? I've been dosing once every day or two, just in case (the puffer is a messy, messy fish...).

Yes- I was using amquel plus, but moved to prime since I didn't need the water conditioners. I usually put a capful in the morning

I tried this and failed. I wholeheartedly like the idea so maybe someone can tell me where I went wrong. Had a very small porcupine puffer in a 10g quarantine and was treating with formalin and water changes every other day. Fish was hanging in well. Decided to do ttm instead so mixed a big batch of water with regular instant ocean brand. Let it mix 3+ hours. Did a 30 min acclimation for the puffer. Matched sg, temp and pH was .1 different. Was fine the next morning and then that night, 24 hrs later, was dead. I feel horrible. Could it have been the water? Some research online says newly mixed saltwater can be caustic. My lfs said they never heard of that. Some more research shows instant ocean has some high heavy metals. I just bought a bucket of seachem aquavitro just in case. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Did he have ich? Did you do ttm with formalin? I don't measure ph, just mix salt water and allow it to circulate at least over night. I'm using i/o salt with ttm and these fishes are doing great. Also if salinity matches, there is no need for acclimation, just plop them in. Are you using prime or some sort of ammonia detoxifier?

I thought ich at first and now doing some more reading it sounds like it was most likely velvet. The formalin was used in the puffers qt each night and a 50% water change every other day. It was just strange that she was picking up so well right before I transferred her. I used prime when starting the ttm. On another note, I used the remaining batch of instant ocean water to do a 30% water change on a seahorse tank (assuming it was not the water). The new water was cloudy and has yet to clear 16 hours later. Maybe a bad batch? I will do a wc tonight with seachem. I'm sure it wasn't the ttm. thanks for the help, will try this method again.

Anyone here know how "long" I can stretch the 4 day stay with prime? I've been needing to do transfers every 4 days to keep water quality as I don't have a cycled qt ready for a couple more weeks.

Would it be a problem to treat with prazipro before doing ttm? I am setting up my new tank and would like to treat with prazipro and do the ttm before I move my fish to it just to be safe. I have had all the fish for at least 6 months and am considering just doing the prazipro treatment in their current tank then doing the ttm and into the new tank. What size tank would I need for ttm to do a pair of clowns, small sailfin, starry blenny, melanarus wrasse, and 2 green chromis at the same time?

I'm doing the TTM at the moment. I'm using prime but the bottle doesn't say how much and how often to use. I'm assuming use it when ammonia is detected?

My Prime bottle (50ml) says that a full capfull treats 50g, and that each thread on the inside is approximately 1ml, so it'd treat 10g. I'm at the end stages of tank transfer for my Foxface and Puffer, using 10g tanks, and have been dosing 1ml once per day just to be safe. The fish appear to be in fantastic condition.

Anyone know? Or could I do ttm into the new tank and then treat with prazipro in the new tank before any coral goes in?

FWIW, after my own research here, I'll be dosing with PraziPro in my 29g QT before the fish are moved to the DT; I just finished tank transfer this morning. I don't see any reason why you couldn't do PraziPro before TTM, either.

As an aside, I found TTM to be incredibly easy, after some initial hesitation. It's a little extra work, having to keep two of everything ready and cleaned in between transfers, but worth it, IMO. One of the things snorvich recommends is not using a net, which I was concerned about. I have a Foxface and a Puffer, and was a little worried about getting caught with a spine or having him get caught in the net. My solution cost me $6: Mainstays 3-piece colander set at Walmart. The middle size was perfect for my fish, and made catching them a piece of cake.

Question for the pros.

Since the parasite is only on the host for up to 7 days could you do a transfer every day for 7 days. By doing this you could use a smaller tank and not be as concerned with ammonia build up.

Going to be setting up 2 10g tanks to do this. Should I run a hob filter with just filter floss? Or only an air stone? Both?

I used 10g tanks on my two fish, with only an air pump, an air stone, and a heater. Shouldn't need anything else for such a short stay in each tank. One suggestion I have would be to use an air valve that has two outlets for the air stones, that way you can have both on at the same time right before the day of your transfers. Be sure to trash the old tubing and stone after each transfer, too.

Funny how this works, but my new Flame Angel, which is in a 10g tank ready for tank transfer, is showing signs of Flukes. So, I have begun dosing with PraziPro, and will continue it through tank transfer.
