Cryptocaryon Irritans - tank transfer method

Nice guys! I'm doing another transfer tomorrow because but it will be only 2 days instead of 3. I'll be a little busy on the 3rd day so speeding it up this time. Fish are doing well, eating well and not the least bit stressed using TTM.

I may ditch the bleach and soap stuff with the next transfer too!

So far, my progress:

Day #1: 1/10/2014
Day #4: 1/13/2014 (transfer #1 after 3 days)
Day #6: 1/15/2014 (transfer #2 after 2 days)

I use vinegar instead of bleach since it won't harm marine life.

You may want to do an additional transfer since you are shortening the period of the second transfer.

Just did another transfer today... strange, I observed the fish before the transfer and no ich like salt spots on their skin... Right after the transfer, three of the fish had the ich like spots.

This is very similar to last transfer.. Could this just be some particles that get lodged on during the transfer process or particles floating in the new tank? Last transfer, the salt like particles fell off the fish by the night time. This happen to anyone? It seems like it cant be a Trophont since those stay attached for 3+ days.

have any sand particles floating around? if using DT water as your new water it is possible.

i notice fish with stickier coats tend to pick up sand easily. my coral beauty angel is always catching it.

Are you using DT water or new saltwater? If the former, your DT could be infested.

I'm excited to try this method with my new setup and I have a couple of questions that I haven't seen fully addressed yet. I'm going to try 5 gallon buckets with a heater and airstone btw.

1. When the fish arrives from shipping (day 1) do you put the entire bag, water, and fish in the tank? If not how do you do the transfer from the shipping bag to the tank?

2. When transferring the fish from tank 1 to 2 (ie Day 4) and using a colander is it okay to place the colander in tank 2? I picture myself trying to drop the fish in from the colander which sounds like a bad idea and a gradual placement sounds much better. I don't see this being a source of contamination because it wasn't previously in the tank but maybe others disagree?

Thanks!

1. I take the styrofoam container that I receive shipped fish in, tilt it on its side a bit, place the colander in the container and then pour the water and fish directly into the colander - after making sure that you have enough water to do this! I then drip acclimate the fish in this container. Once ready, I simply pick up the colander and transfer the fish to the first tank.

2. You can place the colander directly into the transfer tank, it's not a problem. You'll likely only place the side of it in and tilt so that the fish swims out the side, which is perfectly fine.

In theory you could dump all the water over from Tank 1 to Tank 2 and wouldn't be an issue, albeit highly unadvised. The life cycle phase you are 'tricking' in this QT method is the Tomite phase, where the ich is in a cyst encrusted to a surface (isn't free swimming in the water).

If you were to bring ich over via water during a tank transfer it would likely be in the Protomont phase which just means it recently dropped off the fish and is crawling around... in this phase it would still have to form a cyst somewhere and wait the 72+ hours to hatch, of which by then you have already done your next transfer.

Hence why a little water won't hurt at all.

While this is correct, I try not to transfer water. I am a bit anal on parasite control (as you all know).

If a piece of PCV pipe with a cap on one end was the only hiding spot, would capping the other end while the fish was sleeping inside be a good way to transfer the fish? Small holes could be drilled into the PVC pipe top drain the water.

in theory yes, but if spooking the fish while sleeping may be more risk that he injures himself when initially freaking out. plus if the edges of the holes are sharp, it may scrape itself. I just drain the water down to a level right at the height of the fish and then scoop it out with my hand (vinyl glove on), or use tupperware if it has spines (tangs).

Can someone critique my plan? Here it is below:

1. Start tank transfer this Wed, the 19th.
2. Transfer on Sat, the 22nd.
3. Transfer on Tue, the 25th.
4. Transfer on Fri, the 28th.
5. Transfer on Mon, the 31st to QT tank for 4-6 weeks (or until DT is fallow for up to 9 weeks)

Should I add another transfer on the 31st or can I transfer it to my QT that day?

*what if I started the initial transfer at 6pm on Wed. Should I still do the next transfer on Sat at 8am? If I did the second transfer on Sat at 8am that would not give me the full 72 hour gap between transfers. It would only give me a 62 hr window. Would this be a problem?

I think you'd still be fine transferring the fish in the morning even after starting late. Since you have time, you can always add a transfer or two at the end, since it'll only add a few days. I added a transfer for my fish, too, just because.

No. trophonts drop off during the night time hours. You may inadvertently transfer one.
