Cryptocaryon Irritans - tank transfer method

Since it looks like my current swimmers will go through the entire QT & Prophylactic treatment with Cupramine & Prazipro, could i add a few other new swimmers to the mix and have them go thru the process at the same time?

I am confused. You put a group of fish through tank transfer (how many?) and where are they now? Where is the Hepatus tang? Why are they not together?

I went back to read your posts. You transferred the fish back into QT? Tell me the history of this tank. Were fish ever in it before?

Hi Steve...

QT/HT History......

75gal Reef with a Bio Ball Sump with ATO & Skimmer, Bare Bottom w/ 6) 4" PVC fittings for shelter& Ammonia Badge.
This tank sat completely empty and dormant for 5-7 years.
Cleaned, Filled and seeded with DT filterpad

3/8/12 First sign of ich and decided to go with the Hypo treatment..
3/13 - 3/16 Fill QT @ 1.025
3/16/12 Start to move catchable fish to QT.
3/18/12 Starting to go Hypo lees a few fish still in DT that are not wanting out...
3/22/12 Tear down DT to extract last hold-outs..All swimmers now in QT
3/24/12 QT @ 1.009 (refract.)
3/28/12 Lost 7 of 14 fish. Current swimmers; Hippo Tang (the only one showing spots), Marine Beta, 2) Blue Chromis, 2) Clowns & Firefish.
4/1/12 spots gone from Hippo, all eating well

(Please see the posts below)

5/4/12 (5 weeks @ 1.009) Spots start to show back up on Hippo.

5/11/12 Start TTM
5/11/12 Tear down QT completley, wash out sump, Tank & BioBalls with fresh water only and allowed to air dry in the sun for 2 days.

5/13/12 Refill HT to 1.010 (not knowing what the fish would be @ after TTM)

5/26/12 Complete HYPO and introduce swimmers back to the QT @ 1.015 (Temp & SG adjusted to last TTM) and Hippo still has spots..

The CURRENT occupants of QT; Hippo Tang (the only one showing spots), Marine Beta, 2) Blue Chromis, 2) Clowns & Firefish.

One of my questions... Because all of the fish are going to go thru both Prazi & Cop, why couldnt I add a few of the fish that were going to be replaced due to the loss. If we take the approach that all fish are infected upon arrival and treat accordingly and will have to go thru the same process again?
Just do them all together at the same time?

thanks again for your assistance!
Drew

The ICH Saga……
Post on 3/21/12
First, I acknowledge my own stupidity and not being a good reefer by not QUARANTINE !! Do It, forget the $$ the regret is worse!!!

I am pondering a question;

Discovered Hippo Tang scratching, noticed a spot, found a tiny spot on the Peck. fin of sailfin tang. ALL others, happy and healthy..
Took about 7 days to assemble and fill my Hospital tank, (used filterpad from DT to seed) a 75 gal reef/ bio ball wet dry, auto top off & skimmer. Bare Bottom, w/ 6) 4" PVC fittings for shelter& Ammonia Badge.
Powerhead laying on the bottom and a air pump to a wood airstone.
Took another few days to catch fish and get them into the HT before going Hypo....
In the HT prior to Salinity Drop.. 10 Days from first noticing,
Yellow Tang, Sailfin Tang, Long Nose Hawk, Flame Hawk, Jester Gobi, Lawnmower Blenny, Marine Beta, 2) Clowns, Mandarin Gobi, Fire Fish, Pajama Tetra

NOTE: There are still 4 hold outs in the DT. The Hippo Tang (who has been a worthy opponent) and the FIRST to show signs and 3) Blue Chromis . All are happy, swimming and feeding.

The Yellow Tang and the Sailfin both died on day 10 (HT at 1.025) I decided I could not wait any longer and it was time to go Hypo and acclimate the hold outs.

I started @ 1.025 and did a 5 gal water change that brought me to 1.022
Decided that was a bit drastic so started removing 1 gal at a time and let the auto top off make it up…

Note,
ALL fish seemed happy and healthy in the DT prior to capture.

It has taken me about 70 hrs to exchange 125 gal of FW to dilute the HT to the current 1.009 (measured by calibrated refractometer) and will be maintained by Auto Top off…
Last Night, the Jester Gobi Passed and this morning I found the Long Nose Hawk, Mandarin Gobi Pajama Tetra had expired.

Currently, The clowns are happy and eating well, the Flame hawk is breathing heavy and has lost color. Marine Beta looking well, but have not seen eat. Lawnmower Blenny is not looking great.
The firefish is hiding behind the powerhead, looks like he has color, but don’t want to disturb.

I have not checked any of the water chemistry yet as I just got to 1.009 and was already changing water and kept an eye on the ammonia badge.

Soliciting any thoughts or ideas as I really feel that if I had left everyone in the DT and kept fed properly, there might have been a different result…

Thanks All

I have 7 fish(Marine Beta, 2 Clowns, 2 Blue Chromis, Firefish & Hippo Tang) end of week #7 @ Hypo 1.009 in a 75 gal w/sump w/ Bio Balls, Glass bottom w/ PVC. All feeding and happy. The only fish with cysts was the HT and they all fell off after 1 week @ hypo.
Cysts showed up on HT @ week 5 and have not left. No other swimmers show signs of ich and all play nice!
I have decided the TTM is the way for me to go.

Questions?
Containers? I am thinking about 2) Plastic Totes (I have not yet purchased, so size recommendation please)

The way I am reading this, I understand that NO filtration is necessary?
What would the recommended WC schedule be in the 4 day cycle?
I figure i could make up a large batch of water so there is more consistency in the quality dispensed.
I would get 2 separate air stone & hose & use the same air pump. (airstone held inplace by PVC) Replace airstone every round?
I have 2 korolia 1400's & a korolia #1 (just came off of day tank) or are those too big for water movement?
My ambient air temp is 76-78' do i need heaters and if so, what watt?
Containers to be lit by a clamp on CCFL 5K
Am I missing anything?

Oh, PLEASE... how do you catch fish with Tupperware??? I have always netted my fish and have seen no adverse effects?
5/10/12
Mr Snorvich, Steve,

Once again, thanks for the info...

I have just been back reading and my humble gratitude for you and the others that help us keep our swimming friends (and non-swimmers) healthy..

I am starting TTM in the morning...
I have been plotting on my calender and the kids will be out of prison on week # 9 of DT Fallow. I will need to re-acclimate back up to 1.026 from 1.009. They will be in a 75g reef w/Bio Balls for QT. would you recommend a procedure?
I will be taking down the QT and completely cleaning it as it still has ich, so the swimmers will be going into a tank that has be back up for 7 days @ 1.009.
your thoughts?

thanks again...
Drew

You seeded the QT tank with the display tank filter pad. The display tank has ich. Any fish that went into the QT got reinfected.

i have only 1 QT/HT = same... Im sorry if that caused any confusion...

Yes, I originally seeded the QT tank with a filter from DT, the tank that had Ich. that is the same tank that the fish with ich came out of?
I know that tank and fish had ich and just used the filter pad to help start the bio filter on the QT

Do delicate fish continue to eat after being transferred so frequently?
I'm interested in some of the delicate butterfly fish.

Anyone treat with prazi while performing the tank transfer?

How does this apply to velvet (if at all)?
How long does copper need to be used to eliminate velvet?

Tank transfer is not stressful. If a butterfly is eating, it will continue to do so.

I recommend treating AFTER tank transfer

How does this apply to velvet (if at all)?

Not at all.

How long does copper need to be used to eliminate velvet?

Velvet is a whole different situation. Four weeks

Mr Steve,

I have a copper question and I dont think this is the right thread, but you have all of my history here?

Dosed 8ml of Cupramine 5/28 to 81gal
Dosed 8ml 5/29

* (UPS lost my Copper test kit. New one arrives today)
I DO NOT know my current Cu level...

The Hippo Tang expired 5/30 (AM) and the Firefish that was looking awful as his fins look like they were chewed up and his pec fins looked curled as he expired 5/30 (PM)

The current swimmers, Marine Beta, 2) Clowns & 2) Blue chromis show no signs and never have shown any signs of Ich.
The only think I had EVER seen was a scale or 2 protruding from the side of one of the chromis, but all is well now?

My intentions were to continue Copper and adjust to .50, but dont want to if i dont have to.

thoughts?

thanks
Drew

I have 6-30gal sterilite containers currently filled with s/w from my DT after a recent move. No fish were ever in them (only corals/LR) and the DT the water was taken from had been fallow since Jan 1st after an Ich outbreak. Would this be a suitable setup to use for tank transfer? I have one firefish goby from another tank that has never gone thru QT. The only potential problem I foresee is there are traces of sand in each container from the LR that was in there from before. TIA

I suggest using new water for tank transfer so there is NO chance of any contamination.

Quick question: If I buy two Ammonia Alerts for use in the two tanks for the tank transfer method. What is the best way to steralize the used one while the other is currently being used? I ask because if I let them dry out, they might take some time in the tank before they start working properly again.

I would say just rinse it off and put it in a cup of water. I would think the chances of Ich attaching to the alert badge would be extremely low. Since it's up high on the wall and when they drop off the fish they drop down..

They are inexpensive so just putting one in RO water to keep it wet should work. Better still, just use Prime or equivalent since there is no copper in the water to interfere.

Thanks guys. For the other items in the tanks, such as powerheads and heaters, would a soak in 1:10 vinegar solution followed by drying them be all that is needed to steralize them?

Yes although I use bleach. Remember to rinse.

Over the past few days I have noticed 3 of my fish scratching on rocks/corals. I will be using large plastic garbage cans for the transfers (not filled all the way). Can I use the TTM on 6 small fish at the same time?

I realize I need to leave the tank fallow for 9-11 weeks so i will be placing the fish into the QT tank after the transfers, but I was planning on moving one of the fish to my other tank (I have two DT's). Can I move this fish directly to the tank after the 4 transfers since I'm confident it is otherwise healthy? (I've had it 9 months)

Lastely, I have had a Kole Tang in QT for over a month. It had a paraguard dip a couple weeks ago, but now i suspect ich. I started the TTM today (doing it in 5 gallon buckets completely separate from the others). Since I have been watching it for over a month, and did the paraguard dip, can I put it directly into the DT tank (not the one that I'm keeping fallow) after completing the transfers?

I know that you usually treat with Prazipro after treatment, just wondering if this would still be needed since I have already observed for 4 weeks and did the paraguard dip? I only have a 15 gallon QT, I'm hoping to avoid putting the Kole tang back into it along with the other six fish once they have all been treated.

Thanks for your help. I have read both this thread and the thread on keeping the DT fallow. These threads have been extremely helpful!

It will be clear of ich

Prazipro can be done in the display tank with no problems. I do it because it is great insurance.

Thanks for your help. I have read both this thread and the thread on keeping the DT fallow. These threads have been extremely helpful!

Also, remember not to share water among tanks; it is very important.

Okay great! This really eases my mind! I'll move the Kole Tang and other fish after the transfers are compleat and put the other 5 into QT for the duration of the fallow period.

I think I need to read up on prazipro, I did not realize it was reef safe. Thanks so much for your quick response!
