Cubic Anemone Prop System

Well I've been thinking about doing this for a while but time and space was always in the way. When I saw a tank go up for sale I liked I then asked Kris if he would house it and we would do this together. Got the tank in October from a fellow member and slowly set it up and let it cycle. We then took water from my tank and Kris's along with live rock from my tank to kick start the system.

Shortly after we removed one of my RBTAs from my display. What I didn't realize though was that we picked out the biggest one. When fully open it's a good 10" across at least.

System Specs:
Oceanic 30G Cube and Stand
Mag 5 Return Pump
175W MH Pendant
1" Overflow with dual returns
3-sided acrylic box in the middle for containment after the cut
Smooth and flat Fiji/Tonga with no holes for easy removal

We've been feeding the anemone a few pieces of krill each day for over a week now. So we figured it was about time to start our little project. Tongith we cut it open. One issue was that it was ppretty limp/smushy. Couldn't get it aligned properly for a nice cut of the foot and mouth. The foot kept sliding a certain direction so we concentrated ont he mouth and guessed about the foot.

Kris did the cutting and the razor was pretty sharp but the anemone looked ragged after cutting it. We may try to find another knife of sorts for the next cut. Before the first cut we were tempted to cut it into four due to its size, but since the foot didn't cooperate too well and the cut looked ragged we thought we should give it a rest.

We plan on adding in some carbon tomorrow and doing a partial water change. There is no filtration on the tank besides live rock.

It looks like you tried to cut it under water. I works a lot easier if you take it completely out of the water. Good luck.

Usually, BTAs or RBTAs in general don't have such a tough time recovering when they are physically split.

Good luck!

Man the red on that BTA (well .. guess I mean "those BTA's" now ;) ) is a very rich hue. I don't think my rose compares at all. Is it a matter of what strain a RBTA is, or do you find that certain foods help bring out that richness, or do you think it's just the lighting? (I have mine under Iwasaki 14k). (Sorry for the slightly off topic question. .. Your setup looks cool. Good luck with the prop!)

you cant just cut an anemone in half and not post updates!!!! how are they doing?

thanks
nate

Not sure about the strain but I know of two groups of people that have this particular color.
1)Customers at the LFS I work at; the owner had the original for over ten years and they slowly split

2)DFWMAS; my local fish club, they're nick named Sherman RBTAs due to the city that they supposedly originated from

Well onto the cutting...
Haven't gotten a chance to stop by with the camera, but the day after teh cut we dopped in some Kent Marine Carbon and it made the water very murky, did a water change and put on a Poly Filter which helped a lot.

One half is up and about just fine, the other half is still laying around. I'll get some new pics up next week.

I bet they both died. Lets get an update with pictures.

What's with the negativity? Cutting BTA is a common as fragging zoos, 90% success rate given a healthy specimen and stable holding tank.

Cutting BTA's

Cutting BTA's

Could you please provide more details about this common practice that I am unaware of. Have you tried it and been successful. Could other post pics of such a practice. Also I would like to know why in all the marine fragging books and publications I have not read about this. Are there articles about this practice. A 90% sucess rate should great and if that is the case I'm sure there would be more information on this. Please point me in the direction of more information about this.

firebandit this is pretty standard take it out of the tank use a large sharp razor cut down the middle make sure to get the mouth on both peices

Basically I want to hear from people with experience with this. Who regularly splits their BTA and achieves a 90% or better sucess rate. Are you just saying its common practice or have you actually done this?

Yeah, it's been done plenty of times. There is one member who repeatedly cuts her anemones when they reach the six inch mark, and she's got a whole tub full of small propped RBTAs.

Seems like someone has fallen behind the times...hehe ;)

I believe her tag on RC is RedSonja, let me find the thread quick.

Sorry for being so skeptical but I was trying to incite more posts by the owner. I never realized this was actually a common practice but it makes sense now. Maybe I'll give it a go on my green BTA but I'm not touching my huge RBTA for now. I'll try to keep you posted. Maybe I'll take pics too.
