Hi James,...just read your thread and subscribed. Thanks for sharing all your input. I love your pics. I seen that you had some of your frags for sale in the "Sale Forum", I hope to get a few in the spring if you have any up for sale than. I have been following Darryl's (I see he had some posts on your thread) unfortunately he's taking a break from his reef right now. I would like to see some more FTS if you get a chance. Thanks,---Rick

Man don't know if I could give up the natural look corals look great
Hi Negro Modelo, My next tank will have a natural look with a shallow sand bed. When the system was new, it was really easy to perform maintenance. Just slide a rack over and siphon out the detritus. Now that I have corals growing to the glass, its really tough.

is there any reason why you make frag tank rather than a reef tank?
When I originally started the tank, it was supposed to be a temporary tank to let me grow out the corals I like and to try different approaches to keeping coral (zeovit, vodka, vinegar, feeding, etc.). I went through a couple life changes that delayed my transition to a new tank (job loss).

Words cannont desribe what you have here! Simply Stunning. Congrats on a beautiful system.
Thank you Rinkrat! I'm very happy with how everything turned out. Now I just need to transfer everything over to another tank.

Thank you so much, Rick. Yeah, its sad to see someone as talented as Darryl take a break from the hobby. Whenever I see someone leave the hobby, I know its only a matter of time before they come back bigger and better. I always have frags available. My corals are growing into each other. If I want to prevent my corals from stinging and killing each other (thanks PC Rainbow!), I sell frags or toss cuttings in the trash. I could fill my GEO 6x24 Calcium Reactor twice over with coral skeletons.

As for a FTS, my tank is in a bit of a transition right now. I am slowly (but surely) getting rid of all of my more common corals. I've picked up some of the higher end pieces to see what zeo could do to them. I plan on doing a massive update with the new corals and growth shots.

Warmest Regards,
James

Thanks James,... My tank is in transition also,... why I mention spring. I might even try to head up your way. I'll watch for your future updates.---Rick

James, have you given any thought to the size/dimensions of your future tank?
Can't wait to see that...

Hey Matt,

Hope all is well!

That is an excellent question. I was ready to buy Sunnx's rimess, but ran into a snag getting it out of the basement. The day came. I had an envelope stuffed with cash. The time that it was supposed to be delivered came and went... Sonny had to bring it back into the basement and had to go back to the drawing board. We then had to look at moving companies and the cost started to get really high. Bad news... I dont have a tank for my my new home next year. Good news... I dont have a tank for my new home next year.

To answer your question, I have no clue which way I am going to go with my new tank. I would like to go 260g-300g rimless. This time around, I am going to do a closed loop and take a new approach to my sump. There are soooo many things I would like to change with my tank. As for the builder... ReefSavvy and Miracles are solid choices. I also have a good buddy, RussK08, that built an AMAZING 420g acrylic tank. I may have to try and persuade him to build me an acrylic tank :) I guess only time will tell which way I go.

Happy Holidays,
James

Sounds amazing

I would go with glass but that's me, do you care to share your sum ideas as I would really like to hear all a out it.

Hi Michael,

Hope all is well!

The first change I would make is where my water enters the sump from my overflow box. I do not want to use filter socks, but do want to design a removable compartments for any detritus that enters the sump. The PVC coming into this area of the sump would be removable with union fittings. Filter socks remove to much from the water. If you do not use filter socks, you will get a build up of detritus over time. The way I have my sump set up makes it very hard to remove the detritus. That irritates me.

The water would then go to an area where it would be drawn into an external skimmer. My skimmer would draw air through containers full of soda lime to keep my Ph elevated (assuming my tank will be in my basement and I will have a low Ph due to the Ca reactor).

After the skimmer would come GAC (just enough to keep the water clear), Ca Pump, and probes. The Ca Reactor effluent is drawn into my skimmer for CO2 blowoff.

After GAC/Ca pump/probes would come Zeostart dosing and a zeo reactor.

After the zeo comes the frags. The mulm is a food source for corals.

After the frags come another removable compartment for detritus in case I want fish in my sump again.

Then heaters.

Then return and kalk dripping. This is also where I drill a hole for water to overflown into my homes sump for it to be pumped outside. I pump new salter into the display. Because my new water is colder than the old water, it will sink to the bottom of the display tank (assuming all pumps are turned off). The old water rises and is then pushed into the sump, through the sections mentioned above, then into the return area where i have the hole leading to my homes sump pump.

Happy Holidays,
James

Wow sounds great, I know about the cold water as I add me top off to my sump but I turn of the return pump until the top off water reaches the 78 degre mark then I turn the return pump back on.

Hi James,
How long have you been dripping kalk? No issues with zeo?

Hi Chris,

No issues at all. I've been dripping kalk since the very beginning. I think I am two years with zeo. I've heard some folks say you cannot/should not use kalk with zeo, but I dont see why that is. I use it every hour of every day and have only seen benefits.

Warmest Regards,
James

James!! That sump idea sounds more like a HOTEL than a sump!! :)
Should be pretty amazing.
I'd stay away from acrylic, it just scratches so easily..
My tank was built my miracles. They did a really nice job..
Gotta go big!!

Not sure how I missed this thread, you have an amazing collection there James, can' wait to see in the future what all those corals will look like in a new home!

Dude, epic growth for just 10 months... Is this a full zeo system or just the zeostart, zeobak and xtra? I am thinking it is not because your colors are nice and dark. The .5 nitrates probably keep your color where it is...

I saw where you credit your success to stability but stability alone has never produced that kind of growth rate in my system. I am over a year now with rock solid stability and I am experiencing good growth but nothing like that. In another year you wont even be able to see those frag racks...

Also, I don't see any fish in those pics (or I probably just mossed them) What kind of fish do you have and how often are you feeding?

Always love your tank James, your yellows and oranges are beyond insane man.
Thank you, Brett. I have been upgrading my coral collection lately. If you think I have good colors now, wait until you see the new stuff :spin3:

The scratches are the biggest drawback to the acrylic. If glass were lighter, I wouldn't give it a second thought. Miracles does some incredible work. Sonny's tanks was very impressive. I will get the biggest tank I can get through the door. I've spent a lot of time thinking about my sump. Should come together nicely when I am ready.

Thank you very much! Just wait until I unveil the new coral collection. Reef Raft + ZeoVit :inlove::beer:

I have a full blown zeo system. I am able to keep deep healthy coloration because I target some nutrient in my tank (nitrate of .2 and phosphate between .01-.03). I can get the pastel zeo colors if I want to, but I am much happy with a deep rich color. I've learned how to tweak my coral colors using different nutrient levels and additives. I'm tossing around the idea of doing a "how to" zeo color thread. Potassium is also VERY important with Zeo. I test multiple times a week. The faster the flow through your stones, the greater the need for potassium dosing. Same holds true with the amount of stones.

The pics in the thread are a couple months old. With my most recent growth, space is becoming VERY limited. Even when I move corals around, the smallest piece of a coral remain and begin to encrust the rack. One other issue that I have now are dead spots between the corals. Detritus becomes trapped and forms green algae. I added 2 Jebao WP40s and a WP25 to help out.

I do have some fish in my tank. A melenarus wrassue, clown fish, yellow tang, algae blenny, pygmy angel, file fish, and a couple chromis. I have a foxface in my sump.

Happy Holidays,
James

James,...a"how to" coming from someone with your success would be cool! I'm subscribed,...and you haven't even started it yet.lol---Rick
