Has anyone used the Current USA TrueLumen Pro LED Striplights ? -> http://www.drsfoster...10&pcatid=23510

I am thinking of augmenting the LEDs in my 156G ( 24" deep ) with more blue with this, the Deepwater Blue option.

I currently have two 48" Marine Land LEDs. Hoping to bring out more color in the corals with out spending the big bucks on a pair of Radions.

Appreciate your thoughts.

There's a couple of issues with your plan - intensity and spectrum. Neither the Current nor Marineland strips have much of anything in the violet/UV spectrum. And both really don't have the necessary intensity for SPS corals.

However, if your tank has low-light LPS and/or zoas, palys, mushrooms, etc... and you don't plan on photosynthetic clams, SPS or high-light LPS corals, the low-end LED fixtures like Current, Ecoxotic and Fluval should be fine.

The newest offering by Current (the Orbit Marine Pro LED) is a good deal better than the older TrueLumen Pro fixtures with respect to a more complete spectrum, though they're still somewhat anemic with respect to intensity for a high-light corals.

If you're looking to save $$$ on fixtures for a full-blown reef with high-light corals, the absolute best way to do this is to ditch the idea of LEDs and go with a 6 or 8 bulb T5HO fixture (depending on your tank's width). They do use slightly more electricity and you'll have to replace the lamps once a year or so, but it'll be 5 years or more until the on-going expense catches up to the much higher initial outlay for high-quality LED fixtures.

The new unit is still only 0.5 watt leds. That's very marginal and you will need to run it at 100% to get enough light for the corals. I tested a fellow club members Current led with my PAR meter and it was useless on a 24" deep tank. I won a free Marineland led and it was just as lame. Look at almost every other led fixture supplier and they use 3 watt leds. Just saying that even big company's that you would like to respect can still sell stuff that is best suited for 10 gallon tanks and gold fish.

Spring for the ReefBrite XHO strips. You will be very happy and they have a great resell market as well.

Good point ! Did not know that it was 0.5 watt leds.
So it is back to the drawing board or buying lottery tickets for a Radion !

mling, don't waste the money. Look at Evergrow made fixtures sold by EverGrow, ReefBreeders, OceanRevive and ReefRadiance. The blue ones are sponsors here at RC and have sponsor forums down below.. Units with controllers work great and run very cool. Some even allow for custom led layouts. I got two new IT2080 fixtures for $350 each ($700 total) in a group buy about 3 years ago and Radions would have cost me $750 each and I would have needed 4 of them ($3000 total). They just aren't worth the extra unless you really have the desire to play with color combos all the time.

BuildMyLED.com Super Actinic or 21LEDUSA.com ReefBar Pro 445nm.

I use both to ensure full spectrum of blue/purple. The 21LEDUSA is a DEEP blue, and is what I use for dusk to dawn affect.
