I've read a lot of posts suggesting that cyano enjoys low more than high flow. High flow even seems to be offer often to fight it. I assume this is from lots of expierence fighting cyano. But I did want to toss out my expierence which seems to be the opposite. As possibly there is some middle ground that it does not enjoy.
I have a tank with very low flow by reef standards, probably in the order or 5x turnover max. My return and overflow are both on one side of my standard 55gallon tank. This results in one side of my tank having more flow than the other. My refuge has a turnover somewhere aound 10x I would assume. I've not tested to be 100% sure. I have readings of 0 amm, 0 ite, 0 ate, 0 phosphate cosistantly. I get no noticable cyano growth in my main tank, even in the lowest flow area. Although if I'm going to have cyano it would seem my display with the lowest flow would get cyano. Thats not the case I have a small amount of cyano in my overflow box. This is probably the highest flow areas in my display. I also get a little cyano growth in one corner of my refuge. The corner happens to be only inches away from the return from my sump area and is by far the highest flow in my entire system.
I'm not asking anything just thought it may be food for thought for someone doing some psydo research on cyano or fight it. In the very low flow display I see no cyano. I wouldn't say I'm fighting cyano as its not a bother for me at this point and maybe that has something to do with it. But I've seen it for several months now without expansion in my highest flow areas.
