controlling red slime

is a balancing act.

After the acid bath it's likely you'll have some time (months...perhaps years? It all depends on how you export) before nutrients accumulate to levels that will fuel another Cyano outbreak.

The sand is about a year old. And I have crabs and a goby to clean it so I really dont think its the sand. Sometimes I stir it up by hand.

I'd personally, use a little less sand, perhaps and inch or so with pools for critters that need more.. Puff it up often with a turkey baster ;rock crevices too. To manage nuteint import and export , keep pounding the phosphate with and adsorbent like gfo , or use : lanathanum chloride ; large well lit chaeto refugia ; or perhaps organic carbon dosing. GEt it down in the .03ppm range. Cyano can't make phosphorous and needs it ; it can make fixed nitrogen and CO2 and light are always there for it in an active tank. GAC may help as well.

Personally, I'd wait on organic carbon dosing ; if you go that way I'd stick to soluble organics, vodka(ethanol) and vinegar(acetic acid).
