D-Nak's S. gigantea thread

A few people have been asking to see my S. gigantea collection. So here it is.

In my 120, I currently have two gigs -- Big Blue and Little Green. The tank is a standard 4 x 2 x 2 120 gallon with a Gyre XF150 on the right wall shooting towards the left in pulse mode at approximately 80%, and two MP40s on the back wall. The MP40s are controlled by an Apex via WXM and flow varies throughout the day. Ever since I added the Gyre, the MP40s have been off. I haven't decided if I'm going to keep the Gyre yet. If I do, I'll buy the interface so that I can control it with my Apex and will run it with the MP40s.

Here's Big Blue (It's actually blue on the edge with a purple center). It hosts a pair of Onyx clowns (Rod's/C-Quest lineage). They lay eggs regularly and I recently began collecting the fry. The female is about 4" long:

Here is it with the pumps off. It really spreads out:

This is Little Green. More of a yellowish green. I'm on the hunt for a true green one (I had one and it died so I know there's a definite difference). It's about 6" when fully expanded:

My second system is a rack. It contains two 30 gallon 2 x 2 x 12" high flats on the top shelf (lit by a Kessil A360W and A350W) and four 17 gallon tanks on the bottom shelf. I have nems and various corals in the flats, three pairs of clowns in the bottom tanks, the fourth tank is used as a QT tank. All tanks share a main sump with skimmer, but I can isolate any of the tanks as I need to (which is why I have one QT tank right now).

Here's a full tank shot of the first flat. It contains one gigantea (on the right) and one small H. magnifica (far left). This is the "gig spa" I've mentioned before -- I nicknamed it as such because it contains many different macroalgaes as well as turtle grass, manatee grass, shoal grass, and red mangroves. It's sole purpose is to acclimate my new nems after QT:

This is a multicolor gigantea. It's about 5" when fully expanded. I purchased it completely bleached and it recovered nicely. It hosts a wild pair of Percula:

The clowns sometimes venture over to the magnifica, but usually stick very closely to the gig:

The second flat houses two gigantea and various coral. The 8" brown/tan gigantea was purchased from Blue Zoo (they get gigs frequently and only charge $40 for small ones). The second gig is a tiny purple one -- only about 4". I got it as part of a trade for my skimmer. It wasn't in very good shape when I got it, but it's recovering nicely.

Here are the pair of gigantea. They host my newest pair -- a Bali Aquarich P1 helmet and a misbar from my Onyx pair:

For some reason, the female clown is getting a lot darker after I introduced it, and developed black splotches that are slowly filling in:

And, that's it! I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have.

I've seen this setup personally. Amazing setup! Good work D-nak. Can't wait to see what you do with this other gig

Very nice. I wish I can get nice A. percula and anemones like yours. Like you I really like A. percula and Mag and Gig.
Can you get a better picture of the Mag. Look like he have Purple or red base with blue or purple tips. If he split, I love to get a clone from you.

Awesome setup Dnak. All your anemones look very happy including your clowns :). If you don't mind me asking why do you prefer perculas over oscellaris, aesthetic reasons?

Nice collection you have going there D-nak! I like all the separate tanks you have. Your gigs look nice and healthy. Thanks for sharing.

This is Little Green. More of a yellowish green. I'm on the hunt for a true green one (I had one and it died so I know there's a definite difference).

A true green like this color?

That was a couple years ago with dim lighting. Today, it's lighter like yours. I'm guessing, the darker green is a result of dim lighting. I've had multiple greens that I've lost over the years, and they would always shift color, until I lost them every time I'd try adding another gig - BC days (before cipro). I got some really dark greens in the past. I have another green I got from ptr13, who got it from reef1589. It too, was dark green. Not anymore, it color shifted too.
Here's the above anemone today, more lime green/yellow, not army green.

Here's ptr13's green when I introduced it in the 210 a couple years ago.

Both greens I have today are lime green after intense lighting for a time. Same lime green/yellow shade. Both were a darker green during acclimation.

Maybe your lime green is a result of it getting great lighting with good water quality? And being healthy? What ever the case may be, nice nems you have.

what type of lighting are you running Taylor? I grabbed a healthy green from a user on here a couple months back which has stayed a nice darker green under T5/LED combo. I now just changed my lighting to 250w mh/4 bulb t5. Should a shift in color be expected?

Thanks for the kind words guys. Now that the tanks and nems have stabilized, I feel better about sharing photos. I was going through a period of terrible luck where I was trying to save many sick gigs, but my track record was terrible. Now all of the nems appear to be heathly and growing.

Very nice. I wish I can get nice A. percula and anemones like yours. Like you I really like A. percula and Mag and Gig.

Here's a photo in better light (I turned the blue down on the Kessil A360W):

It's got a purple base, but the tentacles are more of a mauve/drab purple. This is the same mag that used to be completely bleached. As it was recovering it showed signs of possibly having yellow tentacles, but no such luck. If you still want a clone, as soon as it splits and recovers, I'll send it to you.

I think what draws me to percs over ocellaris is the black pigment that is more prevalent in Percula. My favorite color morph are Onyx percs. I lost my wild Onyx to one of the Bali Picassos. She bit off his tail and proceeded to kill him! I recently repaired her with one of my Onyx mis-bar babies (now about a year and a half old) and they've been getting along nicely:

I also have a pair of Darwin ocellaris that a friend gave to me. The female is mean -- she bites my hand when I put it in the tank. I hope they breed soon:

Also i'd like to see a picture of your shelves, that's intriguing.

Here's a photo of the rack itself. I picked up the new sump (Trigger Tideline 48) a couple of weeks ago and hope to install it this weekend. It's a stock sump but fits perfectly underneath the rack. The rack is a standard 48" one found at Lowes, but I replaced the flimsy particle board shelves with plywood painted with waterproof paint and reinforced with wood beams. The entire rack is painted with a special paint designed to reface laminate counters. It's a very thick paint that doesn't allow salt spotting and wipes clean. All of the tanks are Mr. Aqua rimless standard sized tanks, which allow them to fit in the rack (I had to buy rimless ones because the plastic trim on the standard tanks makes them too wide -- I learned the hard way and had to sell all the tanks I bought).

I bought another EB8 and a PM1 for my Apex, so the plan is to clean up all of the wires and cords, and remove all timers and control everything with the Apex. Once that's done I can focus solely on raising Onyx clowns. I just collected a huge clutch so hopefully I'll have some for sale in a year or so.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I may have to re-think looking for another green gig.

Here's a photo of a green one that I used to have:

I was hoping to find another that is the same bright, almost fluorescent green. However, the Kessil A150 that it was under has a way of making things glow. It was never truly healthy and always had somewhat short tentacles, which can also accentuate the green color.

Looks awesome! So in the last picture what's the deal with the different lines on some and not on others? Like I see several with white stripes only by the head.

They're babies from a previous clutch. For percs, the head stripes develop first, then the middle stripe, and finally the tail stripe. What's interesting is that for other species of clowns, such as a tomato clown, their stripes disappear as they get older, and the adult form only has a single stripe.

It is true that dark green will turn yellowish under bright light. That is what happen to mine just after 3 weeks or so.

Now that you realize the truth about santa, I'm hoping you realize the truth about the easter bunny too. Truth is truth. Green is green. Purple is purple. No red. Different shades of green and purple give false appearance of yellow and red and pink. No matter the skill level of photography, or credentials. Truth is truth. Reality is, all the colors have been imported. We've seen them. Money talks, there's no one holding back because it's red.

No matter how good you at at photography, I realize the truth. I hope you do too. Purple is purple, green is green, no matter the shade. Environment can impact all marine life.

It's ok. I still buy christmas presents after all these years. It's ok...

Details matter. Light is one detail. It affects color. No question.
