d2mini's 130g Rimless Cube

Dennis

You should consider placing a watermark on your reef pics...

I love your tank...Awesome setup.....

I think I'm going cube...

Once you go cube you don't go back.....

Keep the pics coming and any recent FTS?

How's the litermeter working for you? How many gallons per day are you changing? I noticed you performed a large water change with RC....but on an ongoing basis what are your plans..?

REAL live sand

REAL live sand

Thanks!
It's whatever substrate is sitting at the bottom of the gulf off the coast of Florida. :D

As in real live sand that I collect from the Gulf of Mexico...is the real thing...full of everything from Coraline clumps, shell fragments, sand and everthing else that makes it to the bottom, to make a very live sand.

I collect it with a dustpan, just skimming the top of the ridges the currents make....where all the life is. Is actually harder to harvest sand than it is live rock...slow process to get the right thing. But worth it as it is an instant start biologically. Is why you can use the Package to start a new tank......real live sand, and some rock...and the tank usually cycles in a week, then part two of the rest of the rock and critters is easily added.

Makes for a usually painless start for a tank..

Like you said, i had to do a large water change recently so that kinda screwed up my long term monitoring of the tank, so have to start over. But now that it's tweaked, everything seems to me running great. I'm currently changing 13.5 liters per day which works out to about 25g/week. Long term i don't plan on doing any large water changes... maybe once per year if it works out.

I can vouch for all that!!!
Setting up this tank was more like doing a tank transfer than setting up a brand new tank. I've said it before and I'll say it again... I'll never set up another new tank without The Package from TBS. Easiest set-up EVARRRR!!!

I just got my itech 200 set up today. How long before the skimmate makes it to the cup? I've had it running 3 hours and was told by John to start wide open.
Although your new doggie is cute, there's no dog like a beagle. They haven't been replaced have they?

Mine skimmed at first, but then took me a while to get going. It was put straight into the brand new tank, wasn't much to skim after the initial set up. No fish, corals etc. Took some tweaking of the water level to get it right, too. I think mine is now in about 6-3/4" of water. Everyone's tank is different. John is great to talk to though so give it some time and let him know what it's doing and he should get you all hooked up.

Awesome tank, I've long since considering going rimless cube for my next tank and I think you helped push me over the edge.

The only thing I didn't see in your setup is a chiller. Do you have enough open surface space that the MH don't dramatically increase water temps? In my current 75g my 2x250w MH raises the water temp by as much as 6-8 degrees in the summer though I'm sure lacking central air doesn't help.

It's easier to get pushed over the edge with rimless.

I do have central ac so the house is a constant temp year round. I have trouble keeping the tank as high 79 degrees and that's with two heaters. I have one 250w mh and 4 T5's.

Pun intended :lol2:

Would you be willing to share the approximate cost of just the tank from your builder? I'll likely look to a local builder, but I'm at a loss of what appropriate pricing for a rimless tank is.

I don't remember... they built my sump too. And then the custom designed overflow. It was all grouped together. But for this exact tank you could probably expect to pay $1500-2000. Depends on the type of glass, glass thickness, how many holes are being drilled, silicone, etc. Mine is starphire on all 4 sides and 1/2" thick with a 3/4" bottom.

haha, well I'm glad I could contribute to your lack of work ethic. :D

It was slow. I dont get paid for what I do, I get paid for what I may have to do. Great build though. It made me think how I can turn my 135 into a rimless. Hmm, LEDs from the ceiling, power run through the attic, along with RO/DI lines. Of course as soon as I had it all planned out, I can just imagine what my wife would say.

So I had the stand built by a local Houston reefer. He did a fantastic job. It was his idea to do single large panel doors with no hardware instead of the split doors on my design.
We did doors on 3 sides and I left one side solid because I knew I'd want one wall to hang stuff on the inside. The acrylic strips will be one of the last things i do.
The tea bottle is for scale.

d2mini,

What kind of wood did he use and also do you know what stain. I really like the look of the stand and I am thinking about finishing my new one the same way. Thanks

I'm running the itech on the 3rd notch, what about you? The water level is midway on the exit pipe which is 7 1/2 inches. Jim says the base on mine is thicker, hence the deeper water
