d2mini's 130g Rimless Cube

I just thought this was funny.
"Kiss" marks left by my yellow eye tang in the algae on the glass. :D

I may have asked before but what camera and lens are you using? I have a Canon 40D and a 17-85mm. I need something good for the macro/closeups.

My money shot thus far. Only for this I used an old Canon 35mm lens.

d2mini- I have a nikon D40 and have been getting some really good shots. One of the first things I learned a long time ago when shooting is to take lots of shots. You'll delete a ton but every once in a while you are rewarded.

I have really been wanting a macro lens but man are they expensive. I use the macro setting and make as many adjustments on my own with what I have. I find that using the zoom lens and then cropping gets me some good ones. Do you have a good recommendation for a macro lens that is reasonably priced.....that doesn't mean $1000.......

Reminds me of all my hunting magazines......"Entry level binoculars-----$1459.00" Yeah right......

I know with this kind of glass you get what you pay for though.......

msr224, the Tamron lens i mentioned is around $4-500 if I remember correctly.
I thought pro nikon lenses like the 70-200vr ($1600 at the time) were expensive.
Until I got my Leica M9. :eek1:

The shot above was the best out of probably 20-25 shots, manually focused.

rvanano, i shoot raw which doesn't apply in-camera saturation, sharpening, etc so i just tweak the pics in small amounts as needed. A little saturation, contrast, sharpening, color balance, nothing major usually but they pretty much all need a little adjustment.

Yeah. I need to pick up an external hard drive before I go back to RAW. I only have like 4 gigs free on my Mac :(

Amen to lots of photos. I usually figure 10-20 good ones for every 100 taken.

WOW!!!! 10 - 20% good? You're better than me!!!!:spin2: I usually get 1 or two really good shots out of about 50.....I think there are a lot of good shots in my pics with a little cropping and some editing. I used to shoot RAW and use CS2 but sometimes it's just too much of a hassle and I'm not that good with CS2 (read: I have know idea how to properly use it.)

How much time do you spend with editing software and are you using preset templates for your photos?

Tamron huh? I'll have to go check out the lenses at my camera shop. They were trying to sell me the Nikon..... I am thinking about trading in the body and upgrading too. I was going to go with the D60 but reviews said it's not any noticably better than mine. I would like live view but......$$$$$ Only available in the upper models.....:sad2:

As I mentioned above, i usually don't do too much. Here's a pic below of my kole tang i took last night. Probably 5 minutes worth of adjustments. I never use presets. Every photos is different.

I like the Tamron 90 better than the Nikon 60 and it's cheaper. Have not tried nikon's longer macro lenses.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek2:

Gorgeous Pic.

We're just starting out with a tank again. Been up and running for a almost 2 months now. Everything from new. I used to have a ton of freshwater tanks and have been wanting salt. Now that I can invest the capital into the proper equipment we are starting one up.

I hope I can get some good pics like that down the road....

Nice build and very nice cabinet work.

BTW- I can cook and would definitely make an impression on you guys in that kitchen. Just ask the wifey, she loves my food, when I have time to cook.....

I do have central ac so the house is a constant temp year round. I have trouble keeping the tank as high 79 degrees and that's with two heaters. I have one 250w mh and 4 T5's.

I use the JBJ true temp heater from BRS
http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/products/miscellaneous/aquarium-heaters/titanium-heater-with-jbj-true-temp-digital-controller.html

You should look into that heater. I have my ac on all the time at around 72F and my tank temp never moves from 81. I have an alarm set on my digital thermometer and that hasn't went off since I bought this heater. It used to go off all the time with crappy glass ones. I'll never switch back.

Beautiful tank by the way

Interesting heater. I am using twin Jager's but still have quite a bit of fluctuation at night. My tank goes from a high of 80-81 when the MH's are on down to 77.5 by the time I get up the next morn.

I ended up with a Biotherm 1000 watt Titanium Heating Element that I was able to plug directly into my RKL. It's working great! Temp is staying right around 80 degrees and can easily go higher. This heater does need a controller like an RKL/RKE or dedicated temp controller.

D2, your amazing with that camera. Do you think you could write a brief guide on how to take decent pictures with both a point n' shoot and a DSLR for all of us? I love my tank but my little sony PN'S makes my tank look like garbage.. HELP US!!:D
