d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

I dunno... I think I'm going to pass on the rabbitfish this time based on the size of my tank. :)

...

Foxface. One Spots staying pretty small relatively to the rest of the family. But magnificents are stunning. I have a one spot now and it's nice but I really miss my Magnificent.

Yep, i had the Magnificent and a Scribbled in my 200. Pretty fish. :)

Yes, my LPS always like them... it was the SPS I had a lot of problems with.

G3 Pro's.

Great to see your new home tank. I've been busy with my own, and summer activities so just noticed your build thread. Thanks as always for the help you've given me. Your designs and attention to detail is second to none.

I ran two G3 Pros on my previous 120g (48Lx24Wx24D) and don't think it was enough. I ran 2 supplemental T5s for a period of time but should have gone with 3 Radions to begin with. Smart move on your part. Another issue was everything being in a canopy restricting the height. I used wide angle lenses to help compensate. When that white paper was released I began using the AB+ schedule (I had even tried out your 2014 schedule for a while). The only problem with that white paper is that they don't show results for all the acropora. That said, I had stylo which did great under the Radions but was not happy anywhere under MH/T5.

I believe the height to have a significant impact. A LFS near me runs them at 24" or higher with great success. Looks like you've planned well and are doing everything right. You certainly put the time and effort in, not to mention impeccable documentation of your journey. Looking forward to future episodes of the D2mini channel.

The chaeto will most likely outgrow everything else, but personally, I like things like Codium, Halimeda opuntia, Hypnea pannosa was the blue one, reds like Gracilaria hayi, Halymenia floresia, and Botryocladia are cool.
I think all of these should do ok in a fuge like mine with no substrate or rock.
If you have a substrate there are a few others that could be planted or attached to rocks.
You can browse around at www.live-plants.com, that's where I get most of mine from. Their stock is always changing though and never seem to have everything I want at once. haha

I haven't set it up yet. just got the new sump. The fuge section is 9.5x11.5x15.
It's not to big. I dont know if I want substrate or not. Just chaeto or display worthy macro. Lol. So many choices

Thanks, John! :)

Mine's 21" x 13" with 16.5" of water (just under 20g), so a bit bigger.
If you want a pretty display refugium, that's cool.
But if you want a refugium to really work for you and pull out nutrients, you can't beat Chaeto.

The refugium is back in bidness!
Chaeto went in this Saturday evening and the rest went in tonite. :)

My little monster is back in the fuge, too. He was hiding when I took the earlier pics. :)
Have another in the display.

Just read all thirty eight pages and like all your other build threads, this is massively EPIC! I too bought "The Package" for my system and I couldn't believe the bio-diversity in the rock and sand. I too had a Seaweed Blenny in mine but he passed during a crisis with a pest control company getting dust into the air column. Long story and I don't care to relive it. At any rate the ONLY issue I had with my TBS rocks were the pests, specifically pistol shrimp. I knew this going into it and prior to placing in my tank I doused it liberally with seltzer water to get them, the bad crabs, and some hellacious Mantis Shrimp out. Got all of them except one pistol and a couple crabs. I can live with that.
I also got rid of the TBS sand as I didn't care for the aesthetics, so when I upgraded tanks last fall I also swapped out the sand. Other than that I would do it all over again.

heh heh, way to marathon it!

You don't like pistols, eh? Bedroom tank? I love them. I have one or two of the big blue/red ones in there too. :)

Shockingly, I have yet to see a single Mantis Shrimp yet. That's a first for me.
And I've only see one Gorilla crab in the tank, which I took care of early on.
Weird! :eek2:

Today's FTS...

Looks good.

Regarding lights - this may totally sound odd and I don't mean it offensive anyway but I would have thought the cord from the lights to drive you nuts. I'm coming at it from the angel of your attention to detail and cable management.

In fact, I'm somewhat the same way with cords and wires. I love pendants and have some in our kitchen. However, has I am currently designing my tank upgrade I ended up going the route of an adjustable shelf to hide the lighting n rather than the pendant. I couldn't figure out a way to solve my cord(s) :(

Tank looks really good has does the sump, house, and everything else you do :) Sometimes I feel like a stalker looking at some of the photos people share because I'm like oh, nice table, or counter, or something else they have going on. One time I found a tank owner that had a picture from the same photographer and gallery hung on his wall. Small world.

But great job.

haha yeah at first I wanted to do something with the cord and then I was like... Meh, why do i care? It is what it is. lol
Maybe some day I'll get around to doing something.

The furniture is driving me nuts. Was just out looking around today.
Its all from our old house and I want something a little more tailored and leaning towards mid century modern for this house.
Why is everything in local stores so dang frumpy?! :headway:

Are you securing any of the macro or just letting it blow around?

Maybe this will answer your question. ;)

Took this vid last night.

deaclauderale, I think d2 is trying out the "Triton Method" and this method recommends no substrate (sand or mud) in the refugium.
