d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

Jack used to live here in St Louis and we were fortunate enough to have him as a club member. He moved to Texas awhile ago...I'm just clowning around.

Tank looks great BTW.

Awesome build. Definately full of good ideas for anyone with an upcoming build, ie.. Me.

That cheato ball rolling with "trees" growing out of it resembles a planet rotating in orbit. I would spend the time to maintain that! ;)

Tagging along...

Been busy! We are back on the deck project.

This was the pic posted a few pages back where we had left off.

And now we have some progress.

Last night I moved the water change shed out of the way and today we have the 12x24 blocks of "Light Silver" Travertine being delivered.
Ben and crew of Tomorrow's Design should be able to make some good progress. :)

Hey Denis,

Your build is as awesome and inspiring as ever. I am in the process of putting together a new 200g and am drawing a lot of ideas from your builds (hope you don't mind). One of them is this bad boy [emoji4]

I plugged it in just to try it out and within seconds it was generating a serious amount of heat. I'm curious as how you deal with this in the confines of a tight cabinet. Do you have to open the doors to cool it during the night? Also, what distance from the water do you have it?

Many thanks and thanks for the inspiration!

I can't remember off hand but I'd say probably around 8" off the water.
Yes, it does generate some heat.
It will actually raise my water temps a degree or so over night.
Opening one of the doors even just a few inches will fully negate that.
I've only had to do this on the hottest summer days when the water temp had already risen from the house AC not being able to keep up during the day.

I purchased one for my fuge. Had a ball the size of a soccer ball to start. Within 4 days it had stopped rotation. That light is a workhorse. It is hot, and will require some ventilation if you can. The back of my stand is open so it's not an issue.
Dennis, thanks for breaking ground on products like this light

Empuñe you recommend adding a fan under the stand to avoid heating issues and get some air flow in there? I can open doors as well but my cats may end up in the water

I've followed every one of your builds and looking forward another one that I'm sure will not disappoint.
Thanks :)

Yup, it's a monster.
I can't take credit though. DamonG recommended it to me, as he did the HPS light I was using on my previous build and he's moved on to another light now that he says is even better. :fun5:

haha, me no comprende! :D
To answer your question, yeah you could add a fan. I've just been lazy. :wavehand:

I purchased 2 for my sump as I'm thinking of making two of the chambers gives with different types of Algae in each. Fan may be very necessary. With a system as beuatifil as yours lazy would be the last impression of have.

I'm curious dude.. Do yours not have the fan on them? The current site for my system is in the basement, and, of course, everything stays cooler now(i even had to up to two heating elements), but previously(until two Months ago), I was on a second floor, and it never effected my temperature, even with my cabinet closed..

But then, I have always had a tiny clip on fan on the sump for evaporative cooling. I think any cabinet should have some form of air movement to cool and aid in gas exchange..

But even now, with running the mars once again on my cheato bucket, and, my newer light on my scrubber(700 watts between the two), I don't have a heat rise on the system..

I have another option also for those that want to tinker.. But it involves taking the light apart.. I follow this thread, so let me know if your interested..

Thanks much Dennis... Though not necessary.. But when your ready to move on, let me know.. He he he The one I'm using now puts out more light,a better spectrum to me, and, it's quieter.. And, for a bigger area, they make much larger sizes.. If your interested, I'll let you know and then, the rest can go off your findings.. But this one was quite a surprise to and for me..
