Damn, My power bill jumped

my bill hit $568...

that was a $200 increase from last month!!!

i am quite sick of the horrendous electricity bill that just keeps getting higher and higher.

i just took my big beckett offline and just using 2 small er's at 35 watts each along with decreasing my photo period to see if i notice a difference in the electrical bill.

i am furious that my electricity bill is so stratopheric...i called the electric co and they said that i used a little more electricity than the same period last year which is consistent with us having a colder winter...but c'mon...a $200 increase from the previous month with no real increase in electrical use.

every bulb in my house is compact flourescents along with gas powered dryer and gas tankless water heater.

i can not find any other way to decrease my electrical consumption as it is pretty much barebones without living in a 3rd world nation.

You could by a device called "Kill-A-Watt" and measure how much an electrical device is using. My MAGs were using double amount of wattage than it stated. The Ampmaster 3000 was using 220 watts vs 160 they claimed. The Sequence and Iwaki pumps were dead on. I also measured my PC and since then Im turning it off when not in used rather than leaving it on 24/7. Leaving my PC on 24/7 costs $8 a month.

The sad thing is it is not likely to get better. A photovoltaic group buy is a very good idea! I did not find the SCE or NVT web site very informative.
It is pretty hard to know if your equipment is using energy wisely. As a group maybe we could compile some information on the real electrical usage of various items, including pumps. But we would need to be able to quantify everything. IE real energy usage versus GPH of water at 4 feet head. I have some actual electrical usage numbers on some of my equipment. But I don't know how many GPH my pump is really moving!
One of the things that drives me crazy is all the things that are powered by little power supplies. Even when you turn off the printer or what ever it is still using electricity. I probably have 20 of these around the house. Granted they should not be using much but they are using electricity 24 hours a day, so it adds up.

I get more bitter with our country's politics every time I get a bill...

Man we are paying the for those CEO's to live on the hog. Wonder if they will pay me to maintain their reefs?

I just got mine, up a 100 bucks to $525! Time to start looking around the house to find out were all the waste is going this is crazy.

Tank is a 180 with 3 250 MH

:(

I am trying to unhook my two mag 12 and just plum my Dart. This morning I shutdown one return Mag12.
Changed my two HQI 250MH from running 8 hours to 6 and 4 hours.
Removed my one Seio 1500.

I am not sure if there is DYI to using NG to heat up the tank?

Can someone tell me in general how much a KWT of electricity is in socal, say peak hours. I'm trying to get a general idea of how much my tank cost a month. I'm at about 10200watt per day.

Cost varies by generation source (which you have no control over) and your relationship to the set baseline usage amount. All this info is detailed on your monthly bill.

Unless you are on a specific energy plan, cost does not vary by time of day.

Drew (in the SCMAS club) bought a gas heater unit for his 500+ reef. I gather it is very pricey to start up, so you need a very large tank to make it pay off.

Group buy anyone?

My beef is with the gas company.

I'm used to bending over for So Cal Edison, however my gad bill was always between $8 and $16 a month.

Recently The gas Company raised their rates and my gas bill is $70 a month now.

This isn't related to my tank in anyway I can determine. I'm just using this thread as an opportunity to rant.

Byan, I have a feeling our electrical bills may settle a little bit after we can tear down all of our quarantine tanks.

Ah the promises of deregulation... effencies driven by competition... cheaper energy my white rear end. Not only does the government allow them to deregulate, they then bail them out when they all should have gone bankrupt and then they allow the companies to gouge the consumers so they can claw their way out of the bankruptcies.

All this while they strip bankruptcy protection away from the common citizens.

Hazah! Long live the king!

gouging

gouging

I guess the utilities companies are wise to the gasoline companies gouging us and no on taking action? How does SDGE or any other utility company have competition? Can I request to change my electric or gas company? or the option is to use them or not...........

Simon

Well the news is not good our usage was down from last month but the bill is even higher again this month! Are they raising the rates every month?

Super NooB What are the tax benifits of the Photovoltaic System? Also curious how you get around HOAs?
