Dan's new 120 gallon!

Quick question

My left drain, every 5 minutes or so makes a gurgle noise and is almost like the over flow box "flushes" like a toilet! what would cause this?

Are you using a durso setup?

thats the vacumm effect when too much water is backed up inside the durso, make sure the hole on top of the durso is cleared or large enough to handle the flow, or raise it a bit higher. If it continues after all of the adjustment, then lower your return rate

So I got the replacement impeller for my RS180 today and all I can say is WOW! probably not impressive to all of you guys but it's the best I have ever had :)

Here is my skimmer after 2 hours!

Past time to empty that cup! How is the quality of the skimmate? If it's too watery, maybe tweaking the riser height / water level is in order?

Tiki, please pardon my ignorance, but was your new impeller simply a replacement or some kind of upgrade?

I got the skimmer used and the ceramic shaft of the impeller was broken so it wouldn't spin up. I replaced it with the same impeller.

The cup fills with a very dense, dry foam with hardly any water in it. This morning I have about 1/2 inch of black sludge. :)

Here are a few updates.

Diatoms are clearing up nicely and I planted my first few macros in the sand :)

I dont know if I want to get rid of the MHs. I really like the shimmer :)

I could put a few extra fans in my canopy but i dont know if it will bring the temp down enough.

You know you want the MHs. You'll get the best colors and probably growth as well. And then there's the shimmer!

Fan(s) on the canopy and fan(s) on the sump should handle most days. It's doesn't get all that hot in Mill Valley...

I just picked up a fan for the canopy to see how much cooler it gets. My lights have been on since 11 am and my temp is at 79.2 degrees. we shall see how low it gets.

All right, I have run my MH's for 6 hours today and my temp got up to 75 degrees. I should be ok with that until I save up enough to buy my chiller.

I will post pictures tomorrow after i move some stuff over.

Good. Don't forget to try to fan the sump too if additional cooling becomes necessary (before buying a chiller).

I have a fan on the sump also, sorry forgot to mention that

The problem with seahorses is the need for low temps.

The closer I keep it to 72 degrees the better.

Anything over 76 degrees long term can cause bacterial infection ultimately leading to the demise of the horse.
