danskim's 300g rimless starphire

I finished the baffles on the sump last night.
But I am trying to decide on a refugium. Originally I was just going to save space and stick the refugium in the sump... approximately 13.5x18x18 space (19 gallons), but I was thinking maybe a separate 20 tall on the side.

Or am I thinking too small altogether?

Well 10% of 300 is 30. If you add on the sump volume minus the LR space I would go with at least a 50 gallon breeder for fully functional refugium. Do you plan on packing it with Cheato and useing it for your main nutrient exporter?

I would do a bigger refugium off-line. I have a 180g and sectioned off an 18g section of my sump to serve as fuge, and wish I went bigger. My chaeto grows so fast.

I posted picks of my GC tank in my thread the seams weren't bad. The bracing was perfect. All in all I have been happy with the tank so far. I have only had it full of water for a few months so time will tell. I have 1 75 fuge but have been thinking of using a 150. I like a lot of fish in my display.

Cant wait to see your updates

eric, if you have the room, do the 150 for your fuge

:D he doing that already :D too late for you now, sensei will punished you soon.

Yeah I think I'll go with the larger refugium. I am going to have to figure out how I'll fit everything inside the stand... I wanted a little frag tank, and I need to fit the RDSB and top off reservoir.

You might want to have a mini-rack inside your stand so you can stack 2 tanks - one for your fuge, one for your RDSB? Your fuge can sit higher, so you can gravity feed back into your sump?

I have a 20g brute can that I was planning on using. I was thinking maybe an acrylic tank that would have more surface area, but I figured the brute can would be easier to take out and empty if I ever needed to replace the sand in the future.

I do have a 30g Oceanic cube and a 34g acrylic hex I could use as my refugium. Not ideal sizes... but better than the in-sump fuge I was originally planning. They would also fit right next to the sump.

I'll take pictures when I get home from work, but basically the sump is half in the stand and half out. I left 28" space from the wall to the back of the stand/tank so that I could walk in and out kind of like a mini fish room.

For aquascaping... basically whatever happens happens.. haha...
But in general I want to leave maximum vertical room for the corals to grow. In my current 150g... I made the rock structures too high, and within a year all my little 1" frags are either touching each other or almost the water surface.

Fish list will consist of my current fish stock plus hopefully a larger harem of anthias (maybe 5 or so), a harem of flasher wrasses (hoping they won't jump out ... my last one did :(), and a few more tangs... possibly a pygmy angel too.

Current fish list:
1 Purple tang
1 Yellow tang
2 lyretail anthias
1 chromis (i had 7 and eventually they all died off :()
1 pigmy hawkfish
1 christmas wrasse (beautiful fish)
1 six line wrasse
2 yellowtail blue damsels (they are nice tempered)
2 a. ocellaris

*edit*
Since I am bored at work... I'll browse liveaquaria. I have an .xls file at home with my fish wish list, but I'll see if I can recreate it now. Since, again, I'm bored at work haha.

Potential future fish stock (in addition to above):
2-3 more lyretail anthias
3-4 bartlett's anthias or hawaiian bicolor anthias
3 carpenter's flasher wrasses
1 powder blue tang (iffy)
1-2 green mandarins
3-5 firefish (i heard these are very cool in a small group)
1 potter's angel or rusty angel

Wrasses are definitely my favorite type of fish, but I think I have to be really cautious since there will be no top/cover...

Pictures of the sump and underneath the stand.
Not cramped, but it could be with a large fuge! Ideas would be appreciated!

There are many cool colored wrasses you can get at a decent price so if they do jump you will not be out a ton of money.

Yeah, I'm not too concerned about price... although it is a consideration.
I just feel terrible when a fish jumps out :( I feel to blame since I put him in a tank with air all around it.

Oh man! with the back of the tank open like that you can do a nice size refugium behind and next to the sump. I can see mangroves growing back there also and up behind the tank. That would look cool in the future with the leaves over the tank and behind it! there is a place in Florida that sells large trees for this purpose. Just an idea. I love my mangrove.
You have plenty of room under that tank. the Brute can come out and you could do two separate tanks for the fuge and RDSB with plenty of room for pumps and such.

Frankie, do you mean a fuge along the wall?
The little brute is for the rdsb. I guess a cylinder isn't as effective as a rectangle, but I figured it'd be easiest to remove if I ever needed.

But yeah... I think you're right about there being enough room. Just need to brush up on my tetris skills :)
