DAS skimmer club

I dont have a DAS, but I feed my skimmer from the overflow. I find that a dual standpipe setup is needed though, since you pretty much have to run the main line to the skimmer with a valve on the skimmer input to back up the flow so air doesnt 'belch' into the skimmer. This valve setup requires a backup drain. Sometimes this can be done with a single standpipe and a 'T' but I find that big bubbles still get into the skimmer and disrupt it. Dual standpipes just work better.

I gravity feed my EX-3 from one of my overflows. I have a tee inline with some water diverted into my sump via a valve (The valve is on the sump drain not before the tee) & the end of the tee feeding my skimmer. The valve lets me control the air/water flow into the skimmer.

My EX-1 is gravity fed. I will take a better picture if needed.

I have a gate valve on the tee that leads to the sump. It allows me to tune the pressure so I can create backpressure with the ball valve feeding the skimmer, and eliminate bubbles.

so the EX-3 does well gravity feed. I thinking of feeding it off my CL system with a gate valve to control the flow should that work ?

These been posted before on setting up these skimmers. These should help some of the new people here.

There are 3 controls on the skimmer:
1. INPUT controlled by gravity feed from overflow with ball or gate valve "or" pump feed with a correctly rated pump
2. OUTPUT controlled by ball or gate valve at skimmer's drain[not needed for most setups]
3. AIRFLOW controlled by air valve

To set your skimmer correctly:
1. first you must be sure the water flow through rate is matched to your skimmer. most of the time, for gravity feed, one would need to tailor the rate back by ball or gate valve in control #1 as the water turnover rate is usually much stronger than your skimmer can accept. or you can feed skimmer with a correctly rated pump or powerhead.

2. next, with the water flow through rate adjusted correctly, the water level within the skimmer must be at the right level for the skimmer to perform optimally. water level should just at the bottom edge of the bayonet connection between the collection cup and skimmer body. the highest water level you should have is no higher than the top edge of the bayonet top edge and the lowest is no lower than 3/4" below the bayonet connection. i like the skimmer water level on the high side, so even when the water flow through rate is correct, the water level is too low for me. so, in order to tailor back the outflow from the skimmer drain and to raise the water level within the skimmer, i use a ball valve or gate valve on the output, which is control #2, and the drain does terminate underwater in my sump. so, the comment that the outflow should not be underwater is a preferred situation, but works great even if you terminate underwater (unless with the correct water flow through rate, the water level in your skimmer is already at the top edge of the bayonet). all that happens when the exhaust terminates underwater is puts a little backpressure on the system, but that just increases the water level in the skimmer, which in my situation is on the low side when the water flow through rate adjusted correctly. the benefit of having the drain terminate underwater is no splashing noise at all, but your sump water level must remain constant or the change can put variable backpressure on the exhaust. i found that the best sump water level is within an inch below the exhaust T-fitting.

3. adjust the air valve for maximum foaming with control #3. on both my Deltec and H&S skimmers that i own, it is tailored back approximately 1/4 - 1/3 which gives me the finest bubbles and good foaming head.

actually - that is a grossly false statement!

There are PLENTY of 'places' that sell DAS Skimmers ... HOWEVER most don't advertise it online.

Dutch Aquarium Systems is a wholesale/distributor business - they do not deal with retail business - hence Petorama.

Alot of LFS's have an account setup with DAS, chances are that one of your LFS has an account setup as well.
Another chance is that yoru LFS will tell you that DAS is a PITA to deal with, and from previous experiences they have seized to order from them due to their poor packaging & poor sucessful shipping rate.

This is the story i got from different LFSs, in Fort Myers, FL, Tampa, Miami & others LFSs that do retail over the internet as a side business.
i have never seen them for sale anywhere but those 2 places. Thanks for clearing that up!!

Thanks for the info Kb-smoker!! So I need to make it just like the pic and feed it from one of my returns. use the gate valve to adjust the water level in the skimmer. so you adjust the flow with the valve before the skimmer, which I can tell when I have the best flow though the skimmer is when my water level get's to the correct place in the skimmer..right??? Thats something I don't know is what flow a EX-3 needs.

yeah....use the input valve to control the water level in the skimmer. If you have the valve fully open and still can't get the water level up, then you need more flow. Only install a valve on the outlet pipe if your return does not have enough flow to get the water level up.

anyone know the size of the barbed input fitting on the DAS EX-1?

I believe I read somewhere that it is 3/4", not completely sure...

I'll never order from petorama again!!!!! I ordered a EX-3
on 7-27-07 and still don't have a skimmer!!! I called
petorama and they said they would take care of it.. that was
a week ago.. So I called again and the store in Texas which
is not a online store said that they could send me one from
their store. DAS is out of the pumps and it would be 2 to 3
weeks before I received one. Which in almost 3 weeks I just
was told this after 5 email's to DAS which they never
replied to. they did send me a email a week ago that said it
was going to be shipped that day(which it wasn't). So I had
to pay 40 more bucks for this skimmer because of tax and
shipping.. NEVER AGAIN!!! But I will say that the store was alot of help, but I still think it's missed up that you order from petorama and the order has nothing to do with them..

Ex-1 or Ex-2????

Planning a bare bottom 60 gallon (30x24x22) mixed reef. 80-90 gallon total volume. heavily stocked.

will an Ex-1 be enough?

I ordered from an EX-1 (11) days ago, yesterday they gave the same information maybe 2 to 3 weeks more. I will start to research Octopus RC models later tonight. The only thing that is holding me from canceling the order is i think the aquabee pumps are quiet from what i have read. if not please someone let me know. THANKS

looking at Octopus DNW-150 Recirculating
Protein Skimmer 5.85 inch diameter better that ex-1. gatevalve and cup drain included.

ORCA was out of stock the day i order it from Petorama. I in my case i can wait but why send me an email saying i will get my tracking number later today, that was about 4 days before i called them. It looks like only two places sale DAS skimmers and they are both slow.
