Venting Air from Skimmer Intake

Venting Air from Skimmer Intake

I believe that Hahnmeister’s dual standpipe is a variant of the “Herbie” method. It does keep air out of the overflow drain.

It is impractical for me to modify my single standpipe scheme. I am considering adding an air vent to the overflow drain. This would be similar to the connection between a kitchen disposal unit and the sink drain. Waste water from the disposal runs horizontally into the vertical sink drain. Air goes up into the sink and waste water goes down.

Are there any other solutions to minimize air in the overflow drain leading to the skimmer?

Has anyone heard anything from ORCA? I ordered the EX-1 from them likke 2 weeks ago......i have contacted them but all they say is that the pumps are stuck in customs.

to me this seems like a bunch of BS. If they have been a company for a coupla years, why now arre customs having a hard time clearing their shipments......and this happens right when they are starting to get their name around, they have to realize they are going to lose alot of business if people have to wait 3 weeks for a skimmer, with only an email saying "Pumps are stuck in Customs, we are looking into the situation, we understand if you want to cancel your order."

I have just heard Orca is swamped, other than that same as you. Orca called me back when I had a few questions a month ago, and they answered my emails promptly so that is a huge plus. I though the DAS units were drop-shipped?

I ordered my EX1 from petorama and got my DAS 1 week later so you should be getting your's soon. Yeah mine was drop shipped from DAS.

thanks for the information guys, hopefully i will be getting this skimmer soon, my tank will be up in 3 days or less. I will let you know if i hear anything.

yeah, it was not a BS excuse, as I got the same response from petorama, but then they emailed me and said the pumps had arrived.

welcome to the aquaria industry, it's pretty much like this all across the board.
and no they wont lose alot of business, probably only 1-3 orders at most, and if they are swamped, they wont care too much. and they make minimal profit from those skimmers anyway, like less than $50 profit, so the only one who is hurting is probably you, unfortunately...:(

I also ordered an EX-1 going on a month now from orca, still no skimmer. Have experienced poor customer service from both orca, and DAS after multiple emails and phone calls have only recieved a very generic E-mail responce from DAS.

FWIW - I ordered my skimmer from Petorama and it wasn't until I filed a grievance though PayPal that I finally got someone to return my emails/phone calls and send the skimmer out.

Hang in there, these are very nice skimmers and worth the wait.

weird. I had no problems whatsoever from petorama and my emails were returned within 24 hrs. It took 1 week to get the skimmer, and this was just last week! Sometimes Orca never returned my emails and usually never returned my calls. I know they are a small company and someone there had health problems though so I understand.

What size is the barbed input fitting on an EX-1, at least I can start getting ready if the thing decides to show up. Thanks.

I think I read in this forum that it is 3/4" but I'm not sure.

Well I recieved an E-mail from Orca today stating that my skimmer should be shipping today from DAS, hopefully this is true and can finally get it up and running.:p
