1.5-2x tank volume. This usually matches up with the volume of the skimmer to give the water about 30-60 seconds in the skimmer. Find the skimmer volume (radiusxradiusx3.14xheight of water in skimmerx30=minimum gph to be effective).

I don't like this formula. A skimmer should have a set flow through rate between point "A" and "B".

Is Petorama shippping DAS skimmers now?

as far as I know they are, mine was shipped 1 week after I placed the order - at first they said the pumps were held up at customs, then soon after they said the pumps had arrived. This was several weeks ago.

What if you just replace the rubber seal with a thicker one?

so far so good I've dumped my 2nd cup and twisted it back on without any leaks today. seems all it needed was a little lubricant.

I would say yes, i ordered August 1 and got it August 15, but during that time the pumps were held in customs as per Petorama and Orca. Their customer service is not good. But, i think the wait is worth it.

Why not? The rate determines the exposure time.

Because I see skimmers rated at 90-300 gallons. Given this rating I am to believe I can run anywhere between 135 and 450 gph with the same results. I don't believe that. I believe there will be a sweet spot where this skimmer runs and the size of tank it is on does not change that. Maybe the rating should be narrowed.

what would you say is the sweet spot for the DAS EX1? I'm running about 150gph through it. Water level is right at the black plastic piece before the neck.

I hope someone who has one can chime in. I ordered an EX-2 and they are back ordered on pumps. Don't know when I'll get it.

I have been waiting for Orca to order my EX-1 for over a month now and honestly I'm getting tired of waiting.

Does anybody know if the pumps are still in customs?

this is why I'm very hesitant to have them build me a custom skimmer, I think they're just too busy - I'm sure they got some pumps just like petorama did, but maybe their waiting list was a lot longer especially since they also have to use them for their custom skimmers

One tip i have found to raise scfh up is increasing the diameter of airline. Gains are there be it 1-5 scfh in what i have found on the few pumps i have tried it on. Increasing the diameter of the venturi hole is not nec, But you will need to mod it by glueing a half inch piece of a cut bic pen to it so the new airline fits snug.
Also drilling the bayonet to accept the larger ailine as well. Be carefull!! You can drill it too big and go thru the edge.
I was getting 3 scfh increase on average with this simple mod.
Very easy to test out before you make it permanent by just holding it in place and testing with flow meter.
Same principal as plumbing, The longer the run the better it is to have a bigger diameter piping.
Dont rush off and do the mod without testing first!!!

Want to order an EX1 as well, but sounds like both places are lacking.

I dont even need or want the pump. I have DAS 2000/1 pumps, but i doubt they will sell it without the pump?

Question: Moving from an in sump (BM200 - that I love) to an external skimmer and have decided on DAS. What I need to know is which model will be best for a 200+g total water volume. Heavily stocked, overly fed mixed reef. I don't want to over skim because I don't think it's good for my corals (MO). So ex-2 or ex-3? Thanks

Heavily stocked, I would go with the EX-3. Sure, I would rate the EX-2 at UP TO 250gallons... but thats an 'UP TO' rating. Heavily stocked... then I think you could use the extra pump actually.

I would go with a EX-3 if I were you. I have a EX-3 on my 180g with a 65 sump.

Help, I went to Lowes today and could not find tubing that fits the intake on the DAS EX-1, except a thick black rubber hose with an 7/8" I.D. inner diameter.

Also what pumps are being used?

BIG THANKS,
