Daves Shallow 35

what do you do working 12 hrs a day?!? Thats crazy. But the tank looks awesome! If i could i would ask you to make a tank for me i like the look

nanokeeper - Sorry the delay. I love my Sunpower but I am also looking into LED lighting. I have a few future plans and some really cool ideas. I think the T5's may overpower the LED's for the shimmer effect.

nano - Just some days you gotta do what you gotta do!

I've enoyed watching your tank progress. I've got a shallow tank in the works and I'm interested in the specifics of the overflow/return on the new tank your going to build. Two holes in the bottom corner for the herbie and one in the side for the return? What size bulkheads? What size return pump?

tuumi - Thanks! Both will be 1/2" holes and bulkheads and I will be using my old Eheim 1250 pump. I like having a low flow sump with powerheads to move stuff around.

A few pictures....

Dave,
Are you spot feeding you war coral? My LFS told me that they grow very slowly. I see yours has grown alot in less than a year.

Saw - Never spot feed. I have been using reef nutrition products that I think have helped the LPS corals thrive. It has only been in there for 7 months too!

There are nights that I come home after work and just cant believe how cool it is to have a reef tank. To think that you have a "tropical zone" inside your house when it is 27 degree's just blows me away. Tonight I came home from work and just stared at the tank. I look to my left and see that the eel has moved to the left rock! I forgot to feed him a couple days and now he's on the prowl. I thawed a shrimp and put it on the side of the tank that he normally feeds from. This was the COOLEST thing I have seen my tank. I was able to snap some pictures of him moving from the left rock to the right and here's the series. Its SO hard to catch him going across with how quick and ninja like he is!

Everything has been smooth sailing. My tank is due for a super cleaning here soon so I need to do that sooner rather than later. My ALK doser had a small air bubble which caused it to feed less ALK in the tank. My ALK was down to 6.5 but I have it back to 8, I hope to get it back to 9-10 in a week or two. The aptasia is going to kill me but I am looking into 5-6 adult berghia nudibraches to take care them.

As for the new tank I've had so many other projects that it has been the last thing to think about. I am trying to start a small company for LED lighting and other reactors for nano tanks and I figured why cant I showcase what I can do. This is what I sketched up in google sketch ( this is my first sketch too :) ).

I plan on a step bookcase that will function as furniture and fish stand. The plumbing will all be hidden and the equipment below the first tank. First tank will be the largest at 30x18x14 and be the shallow reef. Second tank a mangrove biotope 18x18x15. Last will be either an maxi mini anemone tank or NPS tank. Each will feature my LED fixture and all will be feed by the chilled reactor I am working on. The stand will be power coated off white and the shelf's will be a light birch.

I know I have changed my mind a thousand times but with my LED fixtures and focus on custom small tanks this only seems right!

I received my DIY ozone reactor stuff today. I am extremely excited about this and it is going to look great. Hopefully I can have it built this weekend and in the next few weeks have it hooked up. :)

Here's a few pre-fab pictures. The bio-bale material goes into the reactor to slow down the water flow and more reaction time for the ozone and water to react. This will run to my MR1 shorty carbon reactor and then back to my tank.

Yep. The tanks will not flow into each other but all be plumbed into the same sump. Under the first tank the equipment will be stored. Sump, skimmer, ozone, chilled reactor, ect.

After a few to many brews last night I finished putting together my drill press and started to on my new heatsinks. While most people are using larger ones I believe they are overkill. I found a supplier with different size heatsinks that will make my units PERFECT for nano tanks. After receiving them I think the 12 LED units will be 8x3x1.5. :D
