dday80's 70 CAD lights build

Hey everyone!

I was briefly active in the club a few years ago. Grant helped me out a lot with getting the 28 nano set up. After being gone at a work specialty school for a few months, I had some terrible GHA and tried to break down the tank, but I just couldn't let it go. Unfortunately, I lost a lot of corals because of it. About six months ago in a last ditch effort (nothing to lose attitude) I used hydrogen peroxide to get rid of all of the GHA. The hydrogen peroxide worked great and I'm ecstatic to say that I'm GHA free!!! With the success of the nano and a recent promotion I have rewarded myself with a new project.

The CAD lights 70 rimless is on it's way. Equipment list:

CAD lights Artisan ii 2014 rimless 35.5 x 23.5 x 18
Cadlights Piano Black stand
Cadlights sump

2 Ecotech Radion XR15 pro LED's with rear mounts
Vertex Omega 130 Skimmer
Apex controller
Ehiem 1200 return pump
Ehiem Jager 150w heater

Want list:
Ecotech Vortech MP40 quiet drive
Tunze ATO
Apex display

I plan on getting in touch with John at reefcleaners for some dry rock. Hopefully I have this set up and cycling in the beginning of June!

Here are some pics!

28 Nano after GHA recovery. Only things that survived were the red BTA and the GSP colony.

Welcome back! That's a nice equipment list! Are you gonna come to the meeting this month?

Thanks! I would definitely like to come to the meeting. I don't have anything to contribute at the moment. I can bring some GSP if anyone is interested? lol

You don't need to bring anything. No big deal. You never know - someone may want that gsp. If not, take it home after

Hey guys,

Exciting update! I got my order of 50lbs of rock from John at reefcleaners. My initial impression is good. Now the aquascaping adventure begins. I bought some jb weld epoxy and some zip ties tonight. Here are some pics!

Nice thorough plan. I serious hate jb weld in fact I hate any of those sticks. Maybe its cause I have high flow in the tank but I just used the JB on two small sps colonies and their now on the sand bed LOL. For cement, I go with some emaco or marco rocks cement which is emaco.

Looking forward to your design. There is a very popular aquascaper named jester6 in norcal and he uses emaco to create sweet bonsai's etc....

+1 for disliking rods sticking up through rocks if they're at all visible. Or the straight lines of zip ties, even once they're coralline coated. Nature hates straight lines.

I use JB WaterWeld with great, firm success in my dual MP40 tank. The key is to use super glue gel between the rock and the epoxy and between the epoxy and the frag.

I have not tried emaco and it may be a superior product. Dragon's recommendations are usually right on.

Thanks Ken. I just tried the jb rolled it up put glue on both ends. Stuck it the the base of the sps then jammed it to the rock. I guess since the flow was in its path it just blew off the small sps colony due time. I found it on the another coral stung ugh.... If you have the ability to put in larger structures in your tank with no problem emaco is awesome. I was limited on my tank due to the opening and the hood. When I had the 50 rimless cube I emacoed 3 structures and the emaco worked immediately. So be careful cause it hardens pretty fast.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've had success with this in the past and am going to give it a shot. I plan on reinforcing with hidden acrylic rods. I plan on working on it this weekend.

Damn. I thought it was emaco?

And I thought marcorock just bought the emaco in large bulk. Then made smaller kits that they re-packaged in their own packaging calling it E-marco.

I think Dragon is the winner here. The bulk product, emaco, is sold in 50 lb. bags. Several lifetimes supply for most reefers. :)

Marco rocks repackages that or a similar product into more reefer friendly sizes. You don't need much to attach two rocks together.

Someone on the San Francisco Greater BA reef forum has extra for sale if you are interested.

edit:

BTW there has been a name change on the product. It's now MasterEmaco.

Thanks for the heads up John,

I PM'd the seller. If he still has it I may go for it. I don't think I want 50lb bag lol.

Hey guys,

Rock is coming along slowly. Hopefully I finish up this weekend.

I've also started to shop for an ATO. My original plan was to have a container from the container store sitting on top of the sump underneath the stand. I didn't measure how much room I have down there to have an ATO container on one side of the sump. I assumed it would be a very small footprint and would be expensive to have something made. My tunze nano ATO on the 28gal has been very successful and I'm leaning towards that. Will it work if the ATO container is higher than the sump?

If the ATO res is higher than the sump it will siphon into the sump. NOT GOOD!

The simple rule to prevent a siphon is the output level has to always be ABOVE the water level of the source. If you can accomplish that, even if the ATO is above the sump it should work.

Update

Hey everyone!

It's been a while since my last update. I've had a busy summer so far and haven't made a lot of time for the tank. I have finished my rock structures! Below are pics:

Hey Guys,

Before I go further with this tank I need to conduct a leak test. The conservative part of me wants to just use tap water. Another part of me wants to use RO/DI, but that is going to be a lot of water. What have you guys done?
