dead/dying coral and 85 degrees

The End

The End

I think it's over for this coral - do I take it out now?

Just tested ammonia again - same reading. I'm still not sure about the color - but it could be .25 - hard to tell. Have to take hubby to the airport, then I'll come home and change some more water.
I'm pretty bummed about the coral, but even more so about the shrimp, as it was a gift from a friend. - and now some other stuff is starting to look a little off, so probably the ammonia Is high....
How much water should I change when I get home?
5g?
I think I only have about 5 made up..... since I've done two emergency 2g changes (one on Sat because of the heat, and one this morning).

Lizz, If you need more RO water I've got the 55g drum full at the moment and you're welcome to some. I'm having a hard time with this scenario because Friday evening when I popped over the tank temperature was still normal even though it was a warm day and then Saturday morning it was ok as well. As we were talking about before, I've had some crazy (slow) temperature swings in my setups without losing stuff. If it rose up to 85 between me being there in the morning and you getting home later that day I have to ask, are you sure the heater is functioning properly? The other aspect is that the initial shrimp that went missing before you left, normally I wouldn't think that'd be enough to spike the ammonia so bad to cause these issues either but could be wrong. But with the second shrimp MIA as well... that may be it though. You mentioned other stuff is starting to look at little off now too?

Lizz- do a large water change and add the skeleton to the sump. Sorry to hear of the problems. FWIW elegance corals aren't the easiest of corals to maintain.

Thanks for the replies guys - about to change out 5g.

Mel - you're right about other factors being involved - I think there are a few. Factor one - it was actually 84.6 degrees - not all the way up to 85. #2 - I have turtles in an upstairs room. I had left a small space heater on low for them because the first few days were quite cool, so there was heat coming from upstairs. #3 - my heaters were both set to 83 degrees. I have to 50 watt heaters (for about 40g of water). I found that they kept the tank heated between 78 and 80 in the winter, if I set them to 83. They're set to 79 now....

I did test ammonia on Sat when I got back (because of the first missing shrimp) and it seemed fine - you're probably right about the combination of two shrimp dying over the course of a week causing the ammonia spike.

As for the other things looking bad in my tank, I think I was imagining them - the daylights take a 45 min break during the day every day, and the corals were looking a bit pouty - now everything looks good again.

Kind of ironic that I left for Houston to get some sun and the heat here in Rochester caused so many problems (turtles also were over-heated :sad2: )

Thanks Gary - will do.
You're right - the elegance will not be replaced. I think I fell prey to the "aussie elegance is a beginner coral" idea.....

With the heaters now set at 79, are they maintaining that temp or is it running a few degrees lower?

I didn't even know you had turtles upstairs. How are they doing?

Don't overthink the elegance purchase too much... I think we've all added something at some point that made us feel like that. :( Mine was a Goniopora. As pretty as they are and as much as some people seem to keep them alive, I can't bring myself to get another after losing one. Supposedly there are some that are more hardy but I don't want to risk it.

Losing a coral or fish is never easy. The money is just a part of it. I suppose its time to get out of the hobby when it doesnt bother us anymore. That being said -A lesson learned. There will be many more.

oh LIzz...sorry...so sorry. Elegances are definitely not easy...but they are not impossible. I almost gave up myself.
