Death to Snails?

I have had my 75 gallon up and running for about 5 months now and from day one I have not been able to keep a snail alive other than Nassarius snails (which are keeping my DSB nice and white). Margarita and Astrea have been added but they die a few days later.

Fish are doing great, eat like pigs and look beautiful. Hermits and both cleaner shrimp are also doing great...

What could be causing these snails to croak?

Margarita snails are cold water residents and will not survive a normal reef tank environment. Astra cannot right themselves if they fall off. Neither are good choices for the reef tank. Also avoid cowries and bumblebee snails.

BTW, hermit crabs eat snails. I've had hermit crabs eat margarita snails.

You might want to try nerites, ceriths, or turbo snails. I personally am moving away from turbo snails to smaller species because they are less apt to get stuck and die.

I'm a huge fan of trochus snails. They've always lasted longest in my tank....

Turbo's are just too clumsy for me and the one large hermit that I have takes out his anger on them, so they won't do.

I will try the species that you mentioned.

btw, is that a common known fact that margarita snails generally dont make it in a reef environment?

I was always told never buy Margarita and Bumble Bee snails. And non-Mexican turbos are not nearly as big and clumsy. I currently have Nass, non-mex turbos, and cerith snails.
