Deepwater Coral Beauty

My local LFS came in 9 of these during their vanuatu shipments. Gorgeous and affordable.

Question is, will these deepwater orange coral beauties fade back to their normal colours in time? heard so many stories of deepwater xanthics, aberrant forms fading back.

did not buy it, there's still about 4-5 left at the shop and the price is really tempting *slurp*

I don't know for sure about them changing back to the purple color. But I have heard they do keep that orangish-red color. And those are the ones collected from Africa I assume in the pics?

How deep would you say where they are found?
I wonder if temp has anything to do with them getting more purple or diet. These do not look like aberrant or xanthic, so the color should hold. I wish I could try one.

they're from vanuatu and are very affordable.

maybe i should try one. i'm not a fan of coral beauty at all but this colour morph is not bad.

Got this one back on Sep 2009 and it still look about the same. Sorry I don't have a recent pic to compare with.

I think it would hold its color, it's probably a deep-water genetic morph, indirectly related to environment.
flameangel88,
What a nice little juvi BL !! Have you see LA weekly sales, I really want one.

Thanks. Yes, I saw the sale price after getting the weekly email. I actually got the little one for a few bucks cheaper last week. :)

awesome pics.

we get plenty of deepwater coral beauties from bali and phillipines here and their entire body are usually whitish or yellowish. and are very cheap

the vanuatu ones we got yesterday are very orange and almost whole body, except the tail and some parts of their dorsal and anal fins.

anyway i did not get it but a friend of mine did. will see how it holds

LemomLemon that fish you posted is amazing! +1 that you go for it! Those guys have amazing color! BTW just out of curiosity what is one of those going for?

Did COPPS discover these fish also??

I don't know what your issue is, but this will be the last time you will post in this manner. I shoud say, it will be the last time you post in this manner before you lose posting privileges here.

Knock it off.

thanks! yes coral beauties are such highly variable fish.

we see them even in white! deepwater specimens from indonesia/phillipines.

it's funny how angels such as coral beauty, flame, lemonpeel etc are so highly variable and prone to hybridisation, yet others like colini never produce any interesting variations.

I'm not sure of where these are all coming from but my guess is they aren't all deepwater. I saw two at my LFS today marked down to $39 & they have the same coloring as the DD ones being sold & flameangel88 pics.

you are right. doesn't mean a coral beauty having colours like this means they are deep water.

i see coral beauties like this all the time, just that the intensity of orange is usually not up to standard. and they are extremely cheap, being priced the same as a normal coral beauty.

the one i posted is however, more orange than usual is quite stunning in real life actually. deepwater or not i'm not too sure but that's what they are labelled as on the stocklist.
