Derasa Clam falling over

I have a Derasa clam that I have sitting on the substrate (Southdown) and every week or so it ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œfalls overââ"šÂ¬Ã‚. It starts leaning to one side then eventually is pretty much laying on its side. I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want to push it too far down into the substrate or it will have a hard time opening (and sand will get onto the mantle from the side). But how else can I keep from having to mess with it ever week or two?

See if you can get a clam shell that is totally clean and large enough so that your deresa can sit in it like a cradle. This will keep it from moving around and eventually it will attach to the shell and you can then place it wherever the shell fits.

That is exactly what i do.. except I use a flat piece of LR.

In the absence of having a peice of flat live rock, has anyone used any artificial substrate to help clam adhere to?

Just curious.

I have the same problem with my Derasa. It is about 5" and so I don't believe it will shoot out any threads to attach at least I have never seen any since I have had it (6 months). I just keep mounting it upright every couple of days or so. After closer instpection it seems that the shell is canted towards one side, the side it is leaning towards. It is covered on the same side with some anthelia so leaning it against something damages the coral when the clam opens and closes.

I think I will try to create a cradle out of live rock that can hold both clam and coral and see what happens.
