DFS McCulloch's Clownfish

I didn't buy it either - but also thought the price was extremely fair! I also though it was quite a nice looking fish - Juv. fish, but still very nice. I hope that the person who bought it will try to purchase a 2nd one from the Dr.'s and pair them.

Well if they did pair them and spawn them, there would be some new pattern of barring of these fish as the fish being sold would be brothers/sisters.Would like to see what would happen relisticly if a brother/sister fish spawned.Mis bars or no bars...lol

Actually, I believe these fish are already the product of brother/sister spawning. Probably wouldn't see anything out of the ordinary given what adult McCullochs look like (e.g. lack of bars already). I am no expert but they would probably also say that you more than likely wouldn't start seeing genetic issues yet with only a 2nd or 3rd generation inbreeding.

On a somewhat related note, I think it would be interesting to know how small the gene pool really is on a lot of the clowns in the US fish trade.

To speculate as to whether the Mc's that were sent to the states are related or not is completely futile. Ryan (the original breeder) collected a few spawning pairs, so he would be the only person to know what was sent out.

As for misbars, breeders feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they are due to poor nutrition/water quality not genetics when dealing with normally barred broodstock.

Once again, kudos to KK at LA and Ryan for making this beautiful species available to the hobbiest.

True, I was completely speculating. It has been a while since I read Mr. Blue's thread but I thought I remembered him mentioning that he could never seem to get his 4 pairs spawning at the same time. But, I also have really bad memory...

That's what I was trying to say. These fish are so early in the inbreeding line. And I am certainly no expert on McCulloch's but I don't even know how an adult could get misbarred? Smaller headband?

100% agree. After reading the efforts involved by everyone, I didn't think the original prices were outrageous and the price on DD now seems more than fair.

Not to break the RC non-commerical rules, if you are around the breeder circles, you would know. The hint is that the mid sized hatchery on display at the last MACNA & located in inland US.

I wasnt able to attend that last MACNA, and dont know the scret handshake to the "inner circle breeder club". Can you PM me, then? I'm just curious who's breeding them.

How did I completely miss the fact that there were Latz being bred here in the U.S.? Has it been some sort of little secret? I would have thought that there would be a huge celebration going on.

I noticed some other fish going up on Divers Den that were marked as coming from SA so is it safe to assume that is where these came from?

Another question...how hardy are the captive-raised Latz? I assume the mortality rate is drastically improved?

No - These McCulloch's were bred at the DR.'s Wisconsin facility. They kept a pair that they received from Ryan. Either this was the 2nd pair that was listed last year, that didnt sell, or they received other pairs as well. They have a link (listed above) showing the pair in their tank.

I have a new dream fish after seeing that video. :inlove: I love black-and-white fish. Someday, when I'm more settled and have room for a second, bigger setup (and when the price has come down)...I'm seeing a 50-75G full of BTA clones and a pair of these babies.

I'm really happy to see that people are willing to pay premium prices for high-quality CB fish like these, even in this economy--it makes me optimistic about the future of ornamental marine aquaculture.

Sorry I wasn't very clear in my post, but I was asking about where the Latz that they have been posting were coming from...
