Sad and somewhat comical story:
I went to the LFS to just browse around, and happened to fall in love with a beautiful (2 in) diamond watchman goby. Because I currently have a nano, my mind went "goby=small" and I didn't remember that the diamond watch man grew to be pretty sizable. I asked the LFS employee what size it would get....
Him: "Not too big"
Me: "so, I'm not going to wake up one morning to a six inch fish"
Him: "nawh, they don't get that big"
Me: "are they jumpers?"
Him: "they usually stay on the sand bed, there shouldn't be too
much of a worry"
So, I spend 25 smackers on him and take him home, acclimate, and as soon as I can, research more about what I just bought.
It realize that the fish is completely inappropriate for my tank size by far and that I needed to take him back. The LFS was closed at this point, so I put eggcrate over the top, kept an eye on him, and planned to take him back in the morning. Well, morning comes along, and there is the goby snuggled stiffly into the carpet.
Not a whole lot I could do after that. So, the rule that was reinforced that day was: Research all fish before taking anything home.
I suppose that's what I get for breaking my own rule of thumb.
