i got my diamond goby yesterday... when it got into my tank, it stayed in one corner only... next morning it was gone... and then i just rearranged my rocks... and i cant find him any where??

so i found my goby... it jumped out of my tank when i was asleep... and i smashed it with my 5 gal bucket that had water in it... when i lifted it up, i saw it.. :(

:sad2: Yes, they are jumpers, you wouldn't think so since they live on the bottom! Same happened to us a few years ago.

My story I just posted in another thread:

Sad and somewhat comical story:

I went to the LFS to just browse around, and happened to fall in love with a beautiful (2 in) diamond watchman goby. Because I currently have a nano, my mind went "goby=small" and I didn't remember that the diamond watch man grew to be pretty sizable. I asked the LFS employee what size it would get....

Him: "Not too big"
Me: "so, I'm not going to wake up one morning to a six inch fish"
Him: "nawh, they don't get that big"
Me: "are they jumpers?"
Him: "they usually stay on the sand bed, there shouldn't be too
much of a worry"

So, I spend 25 smackers on him and take him home, acclimate, and as soon as I can, research more about what I just bought.

It realize that the fish is completely inappropriate for my tank size by far and that I needed to take him back. The LFS was closed at this point, so I put eggcrate over the top, kept an eye on him, and planned to take him back in the morning. Well, morning comes along, and there is the goby snuggled stiffly into the carpet.

Not a whole lot I could do after that. So, the rule that was reinforced that day was: Research all fish before taking anything home.

I suppose that's what I get for breaking my own rule of thumb.

My watchman jumped out of the styrofoam container in which I was carrying him home from the LFS, and landed in my lap. Not realizing what had happened (driving 85 mph on the interstate, smoking, and talking on my cell phone all at the same time) I thought it to be a bug or something and promptly chucked it out the window. Of course I didn't know what I had done at the time but upon reaching home and realizing that I had lost the fish somewhere on that 19 mile drive between the LFS and home was pretty comical. (To friends and family, mind you.) Anyway, after my wife made me go through everything I did once I left the LFS, I remembered that wet, yet slippery thing I had tossed out the window. Needless to say, I have not been able to live down that event and still am in denial ... to some extent :D

Yea they are jumpers until they are settled in to there environment. Once they are settled and have enought room to hide they should not jump out anymore or go near the top of the fish tank.

Once i had one in a QT tank and he jumped out of that at night and jumped in a dry bucket. Well needless to say he was dead as a door nail.

mine managed to get into my over flow box past 2 screens of eggcrate only to die in the sump after landing on the filter floss and not being able to get through the 3rd screen of eggcrate holding up the filter floss or else it would have been home free... and all that happens one night after he causes a major rock slide where i was up till 4am redoing my rock :(

It really is a pity that there are so many of these fish lost due to carpet surfing. I wonder if aqua cultured diamonds have a tendency to jump less.

With as many of these fish that are lost, I think they are just very skittish by nature and have an over-torqued flight response. :)

hahah comical stories... but i thought he jumped out because of my water... tho i didnt know they were jumpers, i thought that he couldnt stay in the water and just jumped out...

i had a glass cover.. but i broke it cuz i knocked it off my tank on accident while cleaning my skimmer...

but im planning on getting a new tank cover for my 48''... but i dont know where is a good place to buy one at a low price, and my hang on back skimmer takes some space..

Mine went into my overflow the first day. I found him in my sump sponge and put him back into the tank. He's been a model citizen since that time.

I wished mine HAD jumped.
Mine dug himself up under the LR somewhere and it shifted i guess and he died. Couldnt find him after several attempt.
Just had to let him rot away somewhere and waterchage untill the nitrates dropped.
