Diary of 30g Cube SPS tank

I have decided to go with this lighting setup.

PFO horizontal pendant w/ halide socket and two 28w pc sockets.
PFO 175w ballast
175w 15,000k XM bulb
Two 28w actinics

Going with the 175w 15k was recommended by someone who knows alot about lighting and has done alot of experimenting with it.

SO im gunna get that ordered and on the tank.
stay tuned

What are you looking to keep, more importantly what are you looking to keep on the bottom?

Any clams in the plans? If so you will get more out of a 150 HQI then a 175, the tank is pretty deep for a small tank. If your all SPS, or mostly, I would use an HQI, a 150 if not a 250.

I think a 250 HQI is perfect for this tank.

i was going to do a few clams...but mainly just all SPS...before i was looking at the 250w ballast and bulb(the pendant will run up to a 400w)..but i as well as someone else thought that the 250w might be to much for that tank.

250W is not too much light for the tank trust me. I have had my 30g cube set up for over a year now and it works perfectly. When i get home tonight i will take some pics so that you can see what i mean. I would not waste my time or money on anything less that a 250W HQI and i would reccomend getting the phoenix 14k bulb. By far the best one i have had (i have had a Ushio 10k, AB 20k, and the 14k, and its by far the best look and growth/color)

Okay thanks. I had the 250w in mind first but then you kinda start thinking other things but you know they say that first instinct is the right one so i guess ill do the 250w. ALSO i am really a fan of the really blue look in aquariums, thats why i was gong to do the 15k...at first i wanted the 20k but i thought that and 2 actinics would be to blue. what do you think...
P.S> i would love to see some pics

On my 40 gallon I run a 250w 14k and 2 actinic 03's and I love the color spectrum. Looks very good. The 14k by itself without the actinics on looks great too.

I will be running the AB 20k on my tank. No other bulb though. The 250 HQI is going to be great, amazing penetration down to your clams on the bottom. Perfect.

i just got my tanks cleaned out and recharged the battery on my camera so hopefully tomorrow i will get a chance to upload some pics. 14k and actinics would be perfect... 20k was nice but a little dim for my liking after i saw the 14k

ok here we go... its not super clean... but o well...

i think my tank is about 1 year old right now...

Love that CAP, any pics of how big it was when you first got it? Also any pics frm say 6 months and 1 year ago to see a progression?

Getting excited for my tank.

Hey guys..i got some new stuff finally.
I have also got the parameters of the tank perfect as they were off the chart! (nitrate nitrite) and i dont need any of those especially since im doing SPS.

So first is the sump, its a AGA Model 2. I have taken out the bioballs and the eggcrate that was holding it and i have now siliconed the eggcrate sideways to prevent any chaeto from getting into the skimmer pump.(which actually broke so im going to have to get a new one)lol. The sump will be filled with live rock rubble and like i said be used as a refugium.
This is where it will fit at.

This is the sump setup.

I got a MAG 9.5 for my return pump as i want to get all of my flow from the return and not have to add any powerheads or such. Here is a picture of the CPR overflow (800 GPH - 1"bulkhead) that i got and part of my return setup that i have plummed.

I have been doing plumming tonight and its not finished, but when it is tomorrow or the next day ill post pics of the whole system. See look at the mess i have. :eek1:
