what % of H2O2 are people using? Most H2O2 from drug stores are 3%, but you can get it as high as 90%. However anything > 35% (food grade) is very caustic. I was wondering if people that are having success with H2O2 are using a higher % then the people that are using the lower 3%
I was thinking of using it and wanted to know what to buy.

Its been all 3% so far. The best approach with it is to manually siphon all the dinos out by hand, the problem is they grow back

So the peroxide is to prevent regrowth. Most haphazard dosers add a little to an infected tank, it doesn't work, they give up. They will not expend the effort to follow a custom plan. If you post a whole tank shot in this thread, and stay involved so we can track progress, I claim we can beat it with peroxide and a custom approach.

There are non peroxide options listed plenty in Dino threads for people unwilling to try peroxide.



Depending on what's stocked there is a known range of dose, 1-3 mls per ten gallons a few times a week in a certain way after the clean out



Peroxide is old news in aquarium and aquaculture circles, but its under studied.

Consider non peroxide options, post here when other approaches don't work...its easier to mentally allow peroxide use if you view it as a last resort before tank disassembly

Me, I use 35% in a very old pico reef packed with stony corals

Its easy to wield, but you guys with large tanks have some work ahead lol

I systematically dosed peroxide for a week after siphoning off all dinos, then doing a 3 day blackout. Dinos started growing back in the day the lights came back on.

That was the approach I listed above, adding a base dose to a running tank with no plan to maximize the way its applied. If I was sick, and took three days of a random dose of meds that might or might not work.

You wouldn't happen to have a pic of the blackout setup ? Most are just tank lights off, that's not the same

I've noticed lately some peroxide uses that didn't work. No harm was posted, just ineffectiveness of adding a little without a specific plan for the tank. in our thread, we use system details and big clear pics to make dose amnts, changes and verifications, it takes participation but the option is there. The thread is an open invitation for follow up and testing

We press details in such a way that rarely will an invader win, but it starts with a before pic and some prep

I dosed for a week, not three days. Nothing was harmed by it, but it didn't make a dent in the population. I believe I've read that you recommend physically removing the rocks and putting the peroxide directly on them? I have too much rock for that to be feasible for my tank, but what do you do about the stuff that grows in the sandbed?

fwiw, I don't really have dinos very bad anymore. Once I started using GFO their growth slowed down a lot. It takes a couple weeks for them to regrow to noticeable levels after siphoning them out.

There are ways to maximize contact in tank, you don't have to remove rocks. The dose used needs to be matched to full tank shot details, pics and details are needed to know the right approach.

If its coming back its not really a won battle yet, Maybe gfo w eventually starve it. If not, try a custom approach. Depending on pics, there are some tanks I wouldn't recommend using any peroxide.

I think I'm going to hold off on dosing H2O2 for awhile. I took my BP off line and i am now starting to see a reduction in the Dino growth. I think what is happening in my tank is that the Dino is using the carbon and NO3 and PO4 faster than the bacteria can use it.

I got a sample from Canada today and can't remember who it came from I'm guessing it was you dano_b.

Having been in the mail for 20 days it was in pretty rough shape but it looks to be two critters. Diatoms and a branching green algae. I'd guess this came from a young tank since the diatoms were in pretty high numbers.

Long story short...

I bought a rock with some mushrooms, duncans, and trumpet corals on it, and now I am guessing some dinos as well. My tank is 90 gallon and fairly new (3-4 months). Anyway after I put the rock in I had a massive outbreak of what I thought was diatoms, but now I am seeing air bubbles in the film so I am suspecting dinos. I am looking for some confirmation on whether or not it is dinos from the attached images. Here are the rest of my params in case you are wondering...

Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = <5
Phosphate = 0
Calcium = 460
dKH = 12
Salinity = 35ppt
pH = 8.17
Mg = 1320

yes that was me who sent you the sample. no the tank is not new it has been up and running for 3 years. so i'm surprised that the sample was diatoms. sorry the sample was in rough shape , it was staring to die when i sent it to you, and i did not know it would take so long to get to you.

Unfortunately, I don't have a full tank shot. The dinos (I think) where isolated to the front and side glass of my tank. What made me think it was dinos is that it produces bubbles when my lights are on, and my snails are starting to die off, I lose 2-3 everyday. So, today I scaped most of it off and and tried to clean the tank as best I can before I go dark and/or dose H2O2. I did set a fish net up in front of my powerhead to catch some of the strands of gunk that were stirred up with the scraping. I have attached a picture of the snot that started to grow on the net within two hours. There are small bubbles trapped in the snot, which makes me more certain that I am dealing with dinos.
